  1. if weight is important, the 45 One up is a lot heavier option than 10-42 SRAM. The SRAM cassette lasts a very long time, Mine have lasted more than twice as long as previous XTR cassettes, so actually works out cheaper in the long run. I have 2 STANS XD freehub bodies for sale ( R650 each) as I changed wheelsets.
  2. Awesome wheelset! I was surprised by their stiffness. Feels like a legal cheat. I am used to AC hubs, so I use them on geared and SS bikes, no problem, I actually prefer them to some of the ' faster engaging hubs, as AC hubs have pretty large bearings despite the low weight, and replacing them with proper NTN bearings results in very reliable smooth hubs.
  3. Depends on the size of the cut. I Carry a small bottle of superglue, and a bit of old tyre sidewall cut to patch size. Make sure the cut is dry. I you are careful the tyre would not have unseated. This is on the outside of the tyre: Apply superglue and then patch ( keep fingers clear of glue) Re- inflate. Easy, quick. This has helped me home many times. If the cut is too big or the tyre has un-seated, then it is a much longer more difficult process of opening the tyre , drying the cut and gluing the patch on or inserting a tube with gator.
  4. Spez make great bikes and horrible tyres!! The Schwalbes you used before, in snakeskin are in my opinion much better than Spez tyres. I have found their tread patterns pretty good, but sidewalls and volume and composites well below several other makes. Rather try Maxxis or Geax/Vittoria or stick with Scwalbe, worth the extra money.
  5. Tyre weight is obviously relative to the rider weight and riding type. Rotating weight, especially peripheral rotating weight, makes a huge difference, you cannot really compare it to the static weight of the rider ( the rotating weight has to be accelerated and decelerated all the time). I would never advise using the flimsy EVo type Schwalbes , but the skakeskin versions are very reliable. A Racing ralph or Rocket ron ( 29er) is typically 350 grams lighter than Maxxis crossmark lust, this feels very different on the bike, unless you weigh 150kg, then use the Crossmark rear and Ardent front.
  6. We rode Honingklip mtb trails yesterday. Really fantastic. The fascilities are great, they have gone to a lot of trouble with the showers, bikewash etc.Route markings are very good. The black route has some great climbs and awesome views over Botrivier Lagoon and the sea. The guys doing Epic training and Attakwas should find this a very productive venue, easy to link up with Hermanus Hemel en aarde trails and perhaps Lebanon. They also have the brewery next door for after a proper ride.
  7. I am really loving this STR frame!! Paddy( usually rigid) goes Enduro, 140mm X-Fusion shock. Smoof. With Hans Damf, ze German laxative, on the front.
  8. Its fine if you don't mind sitting in a very claustrophobic environment with someone screaming 'Come on Randburg!!!' while listening to techno. Good for fitness, I hated it.
  9. The Hemel en Aarde tracks are looking fantastic at the moment, you can also add in the Urban assault at the back of Hermanus for lekker distance without much roadie stuff, even the road out to Stanford is good as long as you stay off the tar. Do day trips out to Bredasdorp ( Naas and the guys have gone to a lot of trouble to build some awesome singletrack) and Greyton.
  10. Am classic 101 rim, same width as Crest , 21mm, but weigh same as A/C race rim, I weighed mine at 366gr per rim, more than 20gr lighter than Crest. They ( 101) also have the same weight limit as ZTR Arch rims and cost less than Crest/ Arch. A/C race is also very good option, even wider at 23mm, but a bit less robust, and cost twice the price. So, A/C race for great width and weight, A/C 101 for weight, price and strength. PS, I have all have used all the above rims, so this is based on personal experience. Wide lightings seem like a great option, as a wheelset they are lighter than Crest, but the actual rim is heavier ( this is what really counts, rotational weight), but Super wide and thus you can use a narrower tyre to get same/better performance.
  11. Prize money should be proportional to the amount of participants in each category, surely the most fair way. The Elite/pro riders could perhaps have a different scale of remuneration.
  12. Fantastic!! Looking forward to riding there. Honingklip blond one of my favourite brews. Plenty of challenging singletrack would be great, some nice hardcore long climbs. Tracks don't need to be too manicured, but well bermed.
  13. Noli, the service from these two shops has been very, very good, so, the OP has a bad experience and suddenly their service sucks. Not a reflection of the vast majority of the okes on the hub and others I know. So, OP follow a reasonable process 1st, before saying these guys have suckey service. I for one will keep supporting them as they have endeared themselves to me, several times over in the past. Have you had dealings with them?
  14. Do you want a straight or tapered steerer? I have an On*One carbon race 29er fork tapered carbon steerer, but its cut too short ( 160mm) for my current steel frame. It is a lot more aggressive/low than the Niner and should work well on a 26er or for a shorter rider on a 29er. I would highly recommend the carbon forks , as the low weight makes for nimble handling and precise steering and they soak up a lot of trail chatter.
  15. Francois, ou maat ek dink jy moet net n bietjie diep asemhaal. This problem we seem to have in RSA of wanting to react violently when someone, perpetrates a minor ''inconvenience'', this car was keeping the cyclists safer than they would have been if they were riding in single file with cars passing at great speed in close proximity, and you see it as a reason why people want to kill cyclists? how many cyclists are inconvenienced by motorists?
  16. I am not sure I buy the 'Women need a different geometry ' sales blurb. I think there are more variations within each gender group than between genders, as far as bikes are concerned. Next we are going to see bikes for dif ethnic groups? White on a MTB, not logical, Jim'' Bit like a white g-string on a dude.
  17. I spoke to Sgt Combrinck, late entries will be available at the start.
  18. Craft beers for sure, just have less volume, quality over quantity.I would rather drink nothing than Castle, sorry, I just don't like the taste. Honingklip and Napier breweries.
