  1. http://www.carpaints.co.za - they don't paint but sell touch up and match
  2. That F29 frame is great, thanks for that info, I really didn't know what frame I bought, it was cheap and light and I sent it directly from seller to Carbon Bicycle Repairs in Durbanville for a new coat of paint - it's on it's way to Louis today - the spares story goes like this....was building the Open and then kept upgrading the parts - all of a sudden I'm broke because I've upgraded everything. Regarding the TR29 Lauf fork - I haven't and probably won't try it on a trail, but on gravel, no matter how rutted, its incredible. So good in fact that it feels better on gravel than my Stepcast 100 or the shock it replaced, the German A xcite.
  3. Very rude question I weigh 95, yes I could be 5kgs lighter but I'm not giving up beer and I love cooking and someone has to eat it!
  4. So probably a later start than I get and still as crazy scary for me - Seems like my normal and rare road events - allow others slow enough to wheelsuck, refuse to ride on someones wheel, fade, wait for strong poorly seeded tandems to come along and tow me - be polite, thank them, fade up suikerbossie, solo time trial to Bantry bay helping others who then drop me in Seapoint - finish 330/4 hrs and broken
  5. what sort of time would this group do? - might be a good way for me to learn how to ride with others if I can keep up of course.
  6. But, I have been blown away by the Lauf fork - bear in mind that the Open is my gravel bike and I mostly ride gravel - so inevitably this happened... The bike weight has yoyo'd from just below 7.5 to a porky 8.15 - it's now settled on 7.77 which has nice symmetry - The Lauf is light and has allowed me to get beefier wheels. Louis at Knipe racing did some fine tuning like getting rid of the crank creak no one else could. For me this Open is now perfect. I would like to ride the Swartberg GF on it. I'm fit enough but I'm a quitter. The thought of riding up Swartberg pass after 140km in the saddle is daunting. The longest time ever spent on a bike is just under 6 hours on day 2 of the Sani. I would have quit but had a partner. I have entered.......didn't make the start line last year for no reason other that my mental frailty
  7. Building this bike left me with a lot of spare parts as I spent most of 2018 spending 2019 through to 2021s bike budget. What to do with spare parts? Trawl the Hub, find a R2500 beaten up Cannondale frame and have it painted - this is the result
  8. Made some changes to my gravel bike - just about perfect now
  9. At the end of the year I want to get a new bike I don't need - I'm collecting parts during the year in the hope that the financial pain feels less brutal. Amazingly if I weighed less than my current 95, they would have made these components lighter for me
  10. It's so much more fun buying light components than it is giving up beer - in fact I've just got back from a business trip and I have a very light box from Schmolke waiting - I'm going to open a beer knowing that the weight I'll gain will be mitigated by my new lightweight stem and handlebars Yes I know I'm kidding myself but imagine how much faster I'm going to be on my light bike when I eventually commit to the diet
  11. What about a respray - it’s like getting a new bike
  12. It’s quite nice to be an average rider - don’t have to worry about my seeding and just enjoy the ride - I was thinking of starting further back so I can feel like a superstar and pass loads of people and have fun -I won’t do it though because no matter where you start there’s always the pressure to improve
  13. We waited a while for the 4th part of your trilogy but it was well worth it. Inspirational and massively impressive
  14. Would be uncool to wheelsuck a tandem on the master. Worse things have been done on a trek that looked like this
  15. I rarely do what most would call proper mountain biking - I mostly ride the endless forestry gravel roads in my back yard. Trapped in Durban for the weekend I borrowed my brother in laws bike and have spent some time at Holla trails north of Durban. Going back today. Facilities are great but riding in 30 degrees at midday was just stupid.
  16. Ten grand per hour - spend 20 on some vintage Italian steel, take 5 hours, better bang for your buck. Plus you won't feel like you've wasted your money if you do 301.
  17. Was feeling sorry for myself today for various reasons but then the reality check of reading about someone with real problems. Best wishes Cois, hope it all gets better for you from hear on out. You've been dealt a tough hand, thanks for sharing
  18. sorry I should not just blame my inabiltiy to do a sub 3 on bunches. There is also an inherent lack of talent, 95kgs and probably not enough training too
  19. What is the etiquette when it comes to this? - I ride alone most rides and only rode my road bike in 3 closed road events last year - I absolutely sh*t myself in a bunch unless I'm in front. When I get tired I drop right off. When a good tandem team come passed me I find it far less disconcerting to sit behind them, way less twitchy. I will never do a sub 3 because of my refusal to bunch ride but with the help of the odd tandem a 330 semi time trial is in my range for sure.
  20. those are ebike weights so the one with the longest battery life. But in case they aren't, hardtail with your favourite saddle and correct tyre pressure
  21. I have a thing for steel bridges. My pyga is a photo slut. Nice combination. Hot, hard ride, beer earned
