I FLY Posted November 8, 2013 Share My grandfather and Italian man who fought in WW2 came to S.A. from Egypt where he was in the war. My grandfather fought for the British during Boer war. He was captured, befriended one of his prison guards and met the guard's sister. After the war he was released and sent back to Britain. When he was demobilised he came back here and married his guard's sister. My dad was one of 8 kids so they did not take away all his ammo. Read Roald Dahls' biography "Boy". He tells of how the doctor came to their house and removed his tonsils on the kitchen table without anaesthetic. Yes, I know he's Roald Dahl, and he could spin a good yarn, but that part is apparently true and it was done routinely that way before WW2.
