one-upmanship. exactly that. Its a case of " oh look at me. my wallet is bigger than yours"

That's the case around here close to where I live, Outeniqua and Glentana beaches, everyone wants the bigger more expensive house and then they normally are retired people who moved down here from GP, built these huge houses, kids with grandkids come down ones or twice and experience the cold water and that then would be their first and normally their last holiday spend here.

Then this huge 7 en suite bedroom house becomes a "white elephant"

If I had gazillions in the bank, I wouldn't have a problem spending loads on a house. But it wouldn't be in a "look at me" suburb like Camps Bay, Clifton etc. It would be on a farm in the mountains.

Or better still, rather in the Karoo hey!
