We have 2 of these but a bike box from your LBS will do the job.A hard case like this will set you back 4-5K

My son slepped his Zula to the UK and back and countless times between Jhb and CT in a cardboard box with no problems

One important thing with a bike box:

WHEELS

Wheels make the world of difference when it comes to moving the damn box around.

I've seen some innovative people at airports who add there own "toy" wheels to a standard cardboard bike box

Im going to cpt next month via plane and want to take my mtb along. What should i know and how do i pack it? Note i do not own or plan to buy and specialised carry bag. Can i just put it in a normal box?

I dont use my padded bike bag anymore, my bikes have been damaged by other baggage been thrown onto the bike bag. I now use a cardboard box from your LBC. Remove handlebars, peddals and rear derailer.Deflate tyres but not fork or shock. Then ask your shop for fork spacers and use them for the forks and swingarm. This will prevent any mishaps when your bike is a the bottom of the pile. Then what I do is put all my riding gear (clothes, lid, camelback)in between the frame in the box. Duct tape shut and away ya go.

Remove your derailleur before checking it in. I arrived at Sani2C with a bent hanger - had to ride on a borrowed bike.

I just bought one of these - looks like a cracker deal - should be arriving today or tomorrow. http://www.buycycle.co.za/buyparts/travel-cases/primal-wear/primal-wear-tura-soft-bike-bag-primal-wear.html

Last year going up for the 94.7 I saw guys with complete bikes roll in on to the fragile section...I couriered my bike, but it seems less of a hassle than taking it apart? But then again my road bike is not really expensive, so I plan on rolling it complete as is...has anyone tried this before? Flying 1time, last time was with kulula.

I am also intending trying this out on the SS (no odds and ends to be bent or broken) as I will be flying SAA from CT to Bloem twice a week and want to take a little spin out there.

If anyone has info on doing this I would appreciate the feedback.

NO !!!! they will put in loose in the hul , and the first bump or hard landing and everything moves down there and falls on your bike . for many years i worked in a bike shop and one of the most common repairs we did was bikes damaged in flight .

I have taken my mountain bike to London and back - in a box. I used a whole roll of duct tape, some bubble wrap - not loads. Bike was fine. In fact after my experience, I now trust a box more than a bag because a box gives rigidity but a bag doesn’t.

I took the handle bar off, both wheels, and left it at that. I did wrap the rear derailleur in a fair amount of wrap because it was sitting directly on the floor of the box. Spacers were put between the brakes/pad thingies and a plastic thing on the fork (dunno what that is called either). The wheels sat either side of the bike, one at the fork end, one at the rear end.

Have also flown two road bikes back to JHB after the Amashova, in boxes, and they are fine.

The box from the bike store should be fine. Remember, you fancy pants bike got shipped to the store in a box just like it from somewhere in the east. On a frickin container ship no less.

Surely someone on the hub can come up with a bike box that is harder then a cardboard box and a bit more durable, but doesn't cost 4-5K, thats madness. :o

What did it cost to rent? How do you also go about doing that, I've had a look at their website, Bikesafe and can't find any info on the renting, just the price of a new one @ R2895.

A cardboard box with a bit of padding inside will suffice. The bike is for free with SAA on doemstics flights so you don't have to pay. I have flown with both SAA and Kulula with just rolling my bike to the plane (padded, tyres a bit deflated, seat post out and handlebar parallel to top tube). However on the SAA flight I could see my bike being mishandled when they loaded the plane so it's always gonna be travelling in a box from now on.

Agreed

A cardboard box is fine.TNT1's comment is very true

After a number of trips my sons cardboard box could not be seen anymore there was so much tape.

The Giant boxes seem to be a bit thicker as well.

I'm seeing my industrial design mate tonight, see if we can come up with something. I agree on the cardboard box scenario as well, only had one issue on a plane in a cardboard box, and that was cause I never removed the RD(so more my fault)

Even if its a box with thicker cardboard, and padding already in the box, possibly rubberised around the bottom of the box.
