Despite his recent performances there is no guarantee of him being in the test squad for the next series. Actually I think that he is unlikely to be selected once Ngidi is no longer injured, and I'm sure he realises that. Sitting on the bench won't pay the bills.

Good luck to him with his future.

This is actually great news for Dale Steyn, he should have a good run to extend his wicket tally.

There was probably a chance that they would drop rest Steyn at some stage if Rabada,Philander,Ngidi and Olivier was fit and in form.

Steyn and philander are both top bowlers, they both however are coming to end of their careers. I give them 2 years max. On top of that (and i wish them all the best), they are both injury prone.

I personally think Olivier is a massive talent and a big loss to SA Cricket as we have 2 seniors bowlers coming to an end of their careers. Real pitty.

BTW sitting on the bench does still pay the bills   ;)

CSA however did offer him a 2-year national contract, but reportedly he will be earning R2.7mil a season on his Kolpak deal. Not sure what the local guys earn.

"The contract is worth a reported R2.7 million per season, and dwarfs the two-year R900 000 per season contract offered to the speedster by Cricket South Africa (CSA)."

No brainer imo

I guess there are also significant match fees in the Proteas contract, and you can't really compare a county season contract with a central national contract apples for apples.

BUT it's fair to say that it would have been more and guaranteed cash in the bank played a big role here.

He's now the 42nd SA Kolpak player.

Could put a decent team together

back to World Cup - https://www.sport24.co.za/Cricket/Proteas/proteas-plenty-of-questions-not-enough-answers-20190225

By now, and by their own admission, the Proteas should be fielding their strongest possible side and the one they had decided to take to the World Cup.

Instead, with just five matches to go until their tournament opener against England on May 30, they are still experimenting.

That was never the plan, and it does not give off a feeling of preparedness.

In fact, predicting the make-up of the World Cup squad and the starting XI was an easier task a few weeks ago than it is now, and that is not a place you want to be in with such little cricket remaining before a tournament that means everything to South Africa.

The time has come to make some big decisions.

Where the FFFFF is JPD?

He is crucial to a very unbalanced ODI team.

He had a shoulder op in october, and should be back by now

"JP aggravated a pre-existing shoulder injury during the recently-concluded series against Zimbabwe," South Africa team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said. "The injury will require surgical management, thus ruling him out of the immediate tour of Australia and the upcoming MSL. At the moment, we can't say how long he will be out for, that is dependent on the results from the surgery."

If Mulder is expected to take this on, then he should be playing as many limited overs games as possible, yet he got just 1 game out of the 8 white ball fixtures against pakistan.

We tour India later this year, then we host the Poms for 4 tests. After that we have breadcrumbs to live from if you are a proper cricket supporter; 2 tests here and there. its a f..... joke. so no, I dont blame Duanne for signing with Yorks, he doesnt feature in the ODI plans of our coaching staff.

The wicket at Headingly will see him take loads of wickets.

Same thing happened with Kyle Abbott, Hardus Viljoen, Stiaan van Zyl, the list goes on and on and you must be blind to miss the glaringly obvious...

Be that as it may, we keep unearthing talent, I just wish Otis would start looking for batsmen, because taking 20 wicket is as important as scoring runs. Dale Benkenstein doesnt impress me, specially making doff comments like we are moeg after a long season: REALLY??? all those 3 day tests tiring you okes out???

Bavuma is not a nr 4 batsman

QdK is not a nr 6, he must bat at 7

VDP is not a 7, if he plays (which i also agree, he is coming to the end of his movie reel)

my absolute biggest issue these days is the over rate: it boggles my mind how guys cannot bowl 15 or even 14 overs an hour. it was never a problem, yet it has become one. as a side note, we had to maintain 17 overs an hour in premier league, so I dont know why even 14 is so difficult to achieve.

And another thing: why leave the mighty Hash on the bench for the ODIs against SL when he CLEARLY needs time in the middle? or at least make him play domestic cricket? but the guys are so wrapped up in cotton wool its not even funny. Hash is our only Superstar, we must get the old Warrior back once more, without him we wont have a chance at the WC.

Faf is the best candidate for captaining the side out of the guys around, Markram = deer in headlights. Let him settle in the side first, opening the batting is probably the toughest job in test cricket.

Hamza must get drafted in ASAP, let him bat 6, Bavuma 5 and Faf must bat 4 and stop hiding. when Hash retires we must get Hamza uo the order.

Just some random thoughts, off to ride my bicycle

Someone has already done it:

1. Heino Kuhn (Kent) - The 33-year-old has opened the batting for the Proteas in four Test matches but was told after the tour of England in 2017 that he was unlikely to play again. That opened the door for a move up north and he has had consistent success in the County Championship 2nd division since. Kuhn's quality has never been in doubt, but he was unable to grab the one chance he was given in Proteas colours.

2. Richard Levi (Northants) - Considered a white ball specialist, Levi is a key member of the Northants side in all formats. He has been on the Kolpak train since 2014 and while he may not have been the greatest loss to South African cricket at the time, he still has the experience and proven ability to be selected here.

3. Colin Ackermann (Leicestershire) - Ackermann is a class act and had made a bucket load of runs in the Sunfoil Series before signing his Kolpak deal in 2016. A Test future looked almost certain for him before he left. A former SA U-19 player, Ackermann still returns home for the South African summer to play for the Warriors.

4. Stiaan van Zyl (Sussex) - Injury meant that Van Zyl's role in the County Championship in 2018 was severely limited, but he remains one of those that got away for the Proteas. Van Zyl left after 12 Tests with a modest average of just 26.33, but he was forced to open the batting and never looked comfortable there. His technique and appetite for big scores has been a hallmark of his game for many years, and he walks into this starting XI.

5. Rilee Rossouw (Hampshire) - Undoubtedly one of the biggest losses to South African cricket, the hard-hitting left-hander was on the verge of a Test debut when he signed with Hampshire. He is lethal in all three formats and would be welcomed into most Test sides in world cricket currently.

6. Dane Vilas (Lancashire, w/k) - Vilas was in the unfortunate position of having to compete with Quinton de Kock for a place in the Proteas side, but he did leave with six Test matches to his name. Also very capable of changing gears depending on the format and match situation, he is an accomplished batsman while his wicketkeeping has always been world class.

7. David Wiese (Sussex) - You could easily go with Wayne Parnell (Worcestershire) for the allrounder role, but I like the batting depth that comes with backing Wiese. He averages 33.68 with the bat in first-class cricket and 27.33 with the ball, and he has been in the runs and wickets for Sussex in the four-day game.

8. Simon Harmer (Essex) - Harmer has been the most destructive spinner on the English circuit over the past couple of seasons claiming 72 and 57 first-class wickets in 2017 and 2018, respectively. His numbers have been staggering, and they have not always come on wickets that are conducive to spin bowling.

9. Kyle Abbott (Hampshire) - The seam bowling department is what makes this Kolpak XI really strong. Abbott announced his decision to leave South Africa at a famous Newlands press conference during a Test against Sri Lanka in 2017. He played 11 Tests, 28 ODIs and 21 T20Is for his country.

10. Morne Morkel (Surrey) - Morkel's departure was the way we would like these things to go. He did not abandon South Africa, but retired at the end of what had already been a long and successful international career. He is one of the best fast bowlers South Africa has produced and is very much at home on the County circuit.

11. Duanne Olivier (Yorkshire) - The latest, but certainly not the last. With Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn all in the mix, Olivier had no guarantees over his Test future and announced the call to leave this week.

What really frustrates me about this situation is that everyone who has left except for Rory Kleinveldt is white, and whilst I agree that the country needs to transform, we should be allowing our best players at the top level to compete on merit and merit only, which we are definitely not doing.

But good on them though, it's hard to judge them for taking a [better] opportunity that came their way.

if he wasn't a one-trick pony, i would agree with your sentiment. However, until he masters deliberate variation and some consistent line and length, he is going to be figured out in a hurry when the wicket doesn't provide assistance.

I think you're being a tad unfair Takums

Despite a reputation as a deck-hitting out-and-out quick, Olivier said that he could be a bowler who performs multiple roles for his new team.

"I can be whatever type of bowler the team needs me to be. I think there is a lot of stigma around the fact that people think I can only bowl short balls because that is what I've done in Test matches. And it couldn't be further from the truth. If my team has asked me to bowl short, that's what I'll do," he said.

"I will fill the enforcer role if needed, and sometimes the team will need me to be a back-up, where my job is to tire out and frustrate the batsmen so that another strike bowler may come and take the wicket. I think my strength lies in my flexibility to fill whatever role is required of me. I do like to be the guy the captain goes to when things get tough. And I prefer bowling longer spells."

you play decent grade level cricket, great to have your thoughts to add to us grass bank experts?

I agree with pretty much everything you've said.

Little bit surprised that olivier couldn't wait another month for WC squad selection announcement, he did play 2 of the pakistan games and if ngidi/nortje don't come back from injuries well he was the form bowler.

The 8/9 core proteas players are superstars and comfortable, it's the next 11/12 guys who we have in the wings that also need to be looked after.

interestingly..JP is back at newlands today playing for the first tome in forever.

This oke has bowled 7 on the trot.

taking deeeeeep breaths between balls now

sjoe!!!

titans (with a solid batting lineup) 5-31, in the 13th over.

Markram and Behardien batting.

Morris padded up to come in next

from that point anything above 200 is decent.

50 partnership off 73 balls

100 partnership off 123

150 off 166

200 off 198

250 off 216

they get to 320/6

world record 6th partnership

137 off the final 10 overs

Markram ends up on 169 from 129

Behardien 111* off 100

Morris eventually got to face a single ball, hit it for six.

This might somehow put Markram back in the WC mix?

Probably slipped dane paterson off it (90/0 off 10)

Watching today's ODI against SL and having to listen to the R2000 broadcast. R2000 seems to have gone to some lengths to get better commentators for this season and in Omphile Ramela and Mignon du Preez they have managed to get two useful one's. Both have made good comments and generally talk common sense. So a bit of improvement on R2000's side. Lets hope that the Proteas follow suit with this ODI series and that they don't blow their current good position!

radio2000 team is on average quite decent, to the point where you can turn the TV sound off and the radio on (they watching the same pictures as us anyway a lot of the time)

when he's not away doing stuff for the ECB, Andrew Samson (the wizz) has got to be the most entertaining walking dictionary alive - even better when manners is on air and they pull the most ridiculous threads into a 5day test. The protege they are training up is a disaster. I can find things quicker on espncricinfo.

WORLD CUP YEAR!!!!

looking ahead, we have 4 months to go, and 8 games to rejig the squad.

From what I can see, you can take 16 players to the tournament (in England).

Some are automatically on the list

QDK

Amla

Faf

Miller

JPD (if fit)

Tahir

Rabada

Steyn

Phelhlukwayo

That's 9 players, and probably close to our starting lineup

The other 7 players would come from

HKlaasen - backup keeper/bat

2/3 batsmen from

vd dussen/reeza/markram/

3/4 bowlers from

ngidi/shamzi/olivier/pretorius/mulder

it seems behardien and morris are totally out of the reckoning

i don't see vern/junior dala/peterson coming in either.

Whatcha think?

Can we avenge this?

this match ended in a tie.

Australia went through to final as they had finished higher in the super six table, which had this  rule of carrying points through form the group rounds. It all came down to us actually losing to Zim in the opening round, Pakistan who finished top of the log, won 2 of their last 5 games and were no match in the final.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/25/content/story/1138313.html

6 weeks later and I think we still don't have answers to many of the questions we faced back then.

the only real update I have is that it's only 15 players in the WC squad, and Olivier is most definitely out.
