Kamikaze - you have to hook your power balance bracelet over the bar-end.It has been proven to help with staying attached to the bike--specially on the really big airs. try it, you'll like it!!

PS you are 100% correct you don't need bar ends when doing 20km trail rides while clearing a couple of 10cm gaps every now and again.
