Got married in 2009 and got back from honeymoon in Thailand 5 days before the race. Rode a 3:20something from A but it was hard. Hard isn't even beginning to describe how *** it was

Aha ! Flying of to Thailand tommorow for 2 weeks . I'm coming back with a week and a half to go till Argus . Hope for the best !

this was pretty much my strategy for every argus i entered from 2001-2008:

1) two weeks before race day - dust off bike, pump tyres and lube chain

2) do about 5 training rides before race day, not one longer than 30km (most around the block)

3) lots of recovery time - mandatory

4) drink about 2l of energade the day before (don't know if this actually did anything)

5) get on the bike and ride the argus without expecting too much (this step is critical)

6) ride easy on the hills and bomb the descents (gravity's great!)

i pretty much see-sawed between 3h35 and 4hrs (depending on which group i was with - anywhere from G to S) for several years.

yes, i suffered like hell, but by the time i had to enter again i'd forgotten about the pain.

but it's a fun day out on a bicycle. going too fast or starting to early you miss the fun

I have been training average 8-10 hours per week with a goal of reaching sub4...my best Argus has been 5:01 and the others was over 6 hours...

If I cannot reach sub4 this year I will be very dissapointed as many of the other people seem to do it with much less training...The other goal I have set myself is a new bike if I go below 4...if not I don't want to think of the consequences...

In addition I am on leave from next week for 3 weeks so great for hill training...lets hope for the best!

Will also try for a sub4 if weather is good.

Maybe if you buy the bike now you will reach your goal easier.

8-10 per week is good . Can't see why you shouldn't go sub 4 .

My only solo Argus was in 1998. I bought a bike in mid January having never owned a bike in my life as I was too involved in other sports.

My training consisted of

1 x 20km ride

1 x 70km ride

1 x 105km race ( Ride for Sight) . I had the sweep vehicle for company most of the way.

My Argus time was 4h25 - I had a stunning ride and have been hooked on cycling ever since.

I once rode only having done two rides in the preceding six months. I kakked off but got a 2:40 (on the old route) in the front bunches you keep in the bunch until chappies quite easily. I riveted on chappies and was nearly delirious by the top of suikerboosie

2007 - one training ride (30 km) two weeks before. No cycling or sport (whatsoever) and compettitive smoking for 6 years before that. Did something like a 5h20 (was one of the last groups to go off and while I was coming in at the finish they were packing everything up). Couldn't walk for three days after that.

Started training (consistently 7/8 hours a week for 9 months of the year), stopped smoking and managed a 3h50 in 2009 (with all the wind).

I find that training does help.

That person during smokes the race,

That's me in my first Argus. One at ... what's it called, Ocean View? (A misnomer, like Lavendar Hill.) One coming out of Noordhoek. Another somewhere on Chappies. Now I carry Nocorettes and just use the thought of a ciggie as a good motivation to finish faster (not that I do).
