You can't generalise, I have seen MTbers doing exactly the same.

But I have to agree, it is terrible. I was horrified to watch the some of the TDF riders on TV last year. They rode past what looked like a rather beautiful, scenic lake and at least 30% of the bunch tossed their disused water bottles into the lake.

I can under stand them tossing it on the side of the road, because the spectators rush to pick them up, but into a lake

The generalisation is what the public will invariably make. And I make the generalisation because I think it's appropriate in any event - I didn't see 5600 people while I was riding my race - I must have seen 200; and of those 200 six or seven were direct offenders, and I saw no-one else raise the problem with the offenders. I think my generalisation that "Roadies are pigs" is pretty fair.

An error in your reasoning. The general public do not distinguish between MTBikers, Roadies, Commuters, Downhiller, etc. They see them all as cyclists. The general public would then say "Cyclists are pigs", which would include you. :whistling:

What is more shocking.. the littering, or the astounding revelation that moral outrage on the internet achieves nothing

If, next time one person sees another littering, that other person is called to account as a result of this thread, I will have achieved something.

This kind of comment doesn't help the situation (and, if you're too busy looking at the mountain to understand what I'm writing, the situation is littering).

Good points but you must please use a larger typeface and consider capitalisation if you wish to compete with initial piggy assertion in the thread title.

well i must say the last triathlon i was doing i was simply amazed at how much kit is turfed. if i was not going for a personal best and i had time i would have needed a very large bag to put all the tubes, co2 bombs, tools, pumps, water bottles not too mention a few used sachets. i could probably make a nice tidy profit selling the stuff back to the owners afterwards.

Sorry for my puerile comments. I was clearly misled by the thread title. I thought childish name-calling and silly outbursts would be welcomed here.

Refer to several earlier threads on littering for my more mature contributions.

Please carry on, I will move along and leave you to it.

but can't the same be said of MTB'ers? I have seen many threads on the hub re littering - I can remember one not too long ago about Gu sachets in Tokai........

To say "roadies are pigs" is like saying MTB'er are destroyers of nature........ those nice flowing single tracks were once not there - they had to be made. Bushes and grass removed for you to 'have a good time'.

Just a thought.

Painting everyone with the same brush is not cool

not only the Roadies... saw a guy this weekend at the start line of Babba's Lodge 35km that dropped his empty GU sachet right next to him. but i was ignored when i said to pick it up :-) didn't help him though.. he finished after me and i am a slow cruiser

but even on the road, motorists simple open their window and throw whatever out ....

I do not agree with littering of any kind.

But, most if not all of the pro teams make use of Tacx water bottles, which are fully bio-degradable for that reason. Fortunately most discarded water bottles make it into some or other fan's collection.

But it does not create a good impression in Joe Public's eyes.

Which begs the question: why don't nutrition companies focus more on bio-degradable packaging for their products? And I do not mean recyclable, I mean bio-degradable.

I must say I am a roady and not a pig so do not like generalisation, there was 5600 people on the road and you saw seven littering.

However I ask why you would use this stuff , it gives 100 calories, racing I use 1000 calories an hour so what is the use of these GU sachets anyway?

+1 I do not like generalisations either!

and to the OP:

MTBers are pigs as well. I've seen goo sachets (and water bottles & tubes) all deserted next to / on the trail when doing an occasional MTB event. Lets not even start with trespassing on outrides and trampling vegetation when veering off-course....

Easy to generalise, but the problem with pointing fingers is that there are generally more pointing back at yourself (from the same hand!).

Littering occurs on and off the road.

I recall a while back someone commented on one of the top junior MTB'rs who on finishing a race went back to pick up a wrapper he dropped along the way.

Its not only cyclists, its all users of the road but sadly one would think cyclists would understand this more (the mess littering creates) as we are always at the side of the road and get to see what you miss when driving along.
