So as winter is approaching the thought of riding early in the morning is obviously not as appealing as it was a few weeks ago.

What generally happens to your training during winter:

  1. Do you train more?
  2. Do you train less?
  3. How do you keep motivated?

Personally, I am doing Sani2c and then intend having very little structure to training besides for my swimming which I intend to keep up with. I intend on going on lots of easy rides with mates which should ensure a healthy base come the warmer months and the next season.

What are your plans?

Thankfully I work from home so I can leave bang on 4pm and get home for around 5:45 so it does not affect me too much. Other than cold fingers, nose, ears, toes, knees etc!

I try and train more often - so put in more miles. Also include some gym work.

Effort is less than pre-season.

Only way I keep motivated is by inviting - some sort of buddy system.

For the first time I have set up my road bike on an IDT.

Winter will find me doing few, shorter rides, but will be smashing some intervals to keep an edge for as long as my base will hold.

Also plan on a couple of weekend rides with mates at Holla trails to make sure I know what a 3 hour ride feels like

i normally cycle on the weekends days are too short during the week with limited daylight with winter fast approaching. Sunset is much quicker now and hate that its dark earlier thus resulting in limited time in the saddle. Gonna start on my indoor trainer again ... just kills my rear tyre though and not in the mood to get a spare rim and slick tyre maybe i need to

try and continue as normal as possible.

Just changing my twice weekly running sessions to earlier the afternoon and not at night after my son went to bed.

IDT set up in garage, just closing the doors in winter and have a hooded jacket for the stretch from garage to house.

If things change at work, I may very well bring IDT to office and work in a session before/after work

Weekends maybe just start later, like in 9am-ish instead of 6:30 am

AND very important, watch what I eat more closely just incase the training takes a dip.

Just have to work it out, had a very good summer training and riding season and dont want to let all the good work go to waste.

Mostly I dont do much cycling in winter, although I still run a fair amount and do a bit more gym and some swimming, that keeps me fit enough for my requirements.

I can have a fairly good workout by running for 40 minutes or an hour in a nice warm gym and I am done and dusted, but two hours or more on a bicycle in the cold doesn't do much for me.

Once a week on a work morning I will go for a hour and half cycling at 4:00am. During the week it is my normal orbitrek sessions, IDT sessions and core excercises. On Saterdays its a 3 hour ride starting at 7:00.

Probably a stupid question but may I ask what do you mean with that comment ?

Wake up as per usual, continue with my training program....racing Elites this Spring so can't really slack on the training...I just dress a lot warmer and use a big light ;)

Same plan here, just more layers and more light battery charging. Otherwise training times remain the same.

My name is Welcome Manganye from

Ga-rankuwa (35km’s north of

pretoria ),Christopher Ndaba &

Myself are planning a cycling trip from

Ga-rankuwa to Tanzania- mount

Kilimanjaro ( approx 3400 ). The goal is

to achieve this in less than 8

weeks. This means we will be doing +/-

100 km a day and we will have rest

days in between.

The idea & motive is to raise funds for

our community since we have a big

drug problem. There is a drug called

“Nyaope” & it is destroying our youths

future. A typical addict to this drug

would steal, rob & would do anything

just to smoke this drug. It is extremely

addictive so they say. This link

will give you more info about the drug

and its effectsto youth. (

option=com_content&view=article&id=92:effects-

of-nyaope&catid=17:drug-

facts&Itemid=48

)

We also want a drug rehabilitation

center or supporting of local NGO’s to

help eliminate drug dependencies in

youth, a skills centre and a cycling

academy in Ga-rankuwa where other

young people from townships around

Ga-rankuwa can benefit and possibly

change their perception and start

engaging in sport activities.... this Is our

dream.

I have previously cycled from Beit-

brigde ( South Africa and Zimbabwe

border ) to Durban approx 1400 km,

though i was not alone but with a

cycling group. We were doing a climate

change awareness campaign, we love

our planet, this link will give more info

and please watch the youtube

video link below on the sabc news.

Christipher Ndaba my accomplice has

also walked from Ga-rankuwa to Pi

etermaritzburg approx 580 km and again

has walked from Ga-rankuwa to Cape

Town approx 1550 km, he was doing a

drug awareness campaign. This link is

I know we going to make this mission to

Mount Kilimanjaro,Tanzania i know

you are waiting for us with open arms.

We have started training with our

hardtails mountain bikes, we have faith.

We would really appreciate your

support to make this campaign visible

and

carry it forward nationwide.

Kind Regards,

Welcome Manganye
