Sorry but what makes it so expensive and what does it do?

Well that's the issue we have. We don't want to pay that much. It's just a stove top kettle with a nice spout that regulates the flow nicely for pour overs. :)

Hmm, Coffee....

I am on Rooibos at the moment and some Keenum and Oolong.

My fiance works 2 factories from a coffee mill (if I can call it by that title)

Have to withdraw some $$$ tonight for her to go buy some coffee. My bother gave me a Russell Hobbs Brr grinder last month. Tested it a few times with bad quality coffee. Now just to get it into my fiances mind that beans are better

I'm leaving Gordon's Bay now, V12 - I should be there tomorrow before you knock off...

Congratulations - I wish you many thousands of great shots.

Great plumbing, BTW. Down here in the Cape, water doesn't flow uphill.

Hi guys, some input needed.

Bottomless portafilter.... Did a bit of reading, appears that it's a good training tool and obviously looks good as well. The jury seems to be out on the flavour benefits though?

Anyone care to share first hand experience?

I'm eyingt this one...

I love mine. More because you can generally fit a larger basket into it which takes more coffee, which gives me a much richer full flavour....

They seem allow a little more crema into the cup - tastes slightly different, but it's neither bad nor good... I like this one - http://www.cafelat.com/portafilter.html - the only issues are that you can focus on making it look pretty rather than the taste, and sometimes you get squirted ..... in the eye or on the shirt or somesuch - but they are a good learning tool - if you decide to import a caffelat one, let me know - I want one too....

I am no expert, but from what I have read, it is more a diagnostic tool than anything else. It will expose uneven extractions quickly, which will enable you to diagnose the problem.

Have a read here:

http://www.home-barista.com/naked-extraction.html

http://www.home-barista.com/weiss-distribution-technique.html

From what I understand, uneven extractions are commonly caused by lack of distribution (the puck varies in density in different areas of the puck).
