I found some cleaner that is meant for pongy shoes at Sportsmans warehouse - you soak in in a solution before washing. It works to an extent, but it doesn't seem long before needing to do it again. Helmets straps are my real problem. Guess its the proximity to the nose.

Anyone have the problem of smelly cycling tops. My tops (mostly First Ascent) come out of the wash and before I put them on they already have that "I haven't showered for 3 days" smell.

Any suggestions?

its not the top, its you who needs a bath :)

Vinegar also acts as a softener (been using a cupful instead of softener during rinse cycle for years now), and doesn't cause the sludge associated with normal fabric softeners. You should also run a wash cycle once a month with about a liter of vinegar and no clothes, it cleans all the pipes out nicely.

I will duly instruct her to do the above :whistling:

Apologies for hijacking this thread but I may have the solution for those with this problem.

My mother went over to support my brother doing the Transalps a year or two back and drove around in the car with his and his partners kit in the back. As you can imagine the smell was glorious. Having worked in the fragrance industry and being a part time chemist she decided to come up with a formulation to combat this problem (long term goal is to start a little business).

She is busy testing the latest sample and it has worked wonders on mine and my mates stuff. You rinse the clothes in it prior to washing. Can also be used to spray onto smelly hydration packs or shoes. If you guys/girls want I can check if she has samples available for you try – all you would need to do is let her know whether the formulation worked for you or not. Definitely no chance of it damaging any kit as it is essentially a fabric softener with a smell removing agent added - worst thing that can happen is the smell doesn't go away.

PM if keen for a sample (gratis) – based in the North of Joeys.

My camelback hones super bad. It eminates from the straps that go over my shoulders and under the armpits - the primary source of all things stinky! A good wash and a few days in the sun seem to sort it out.

I also keep all my kit in a plastic crate for easy transport and leave that to dry in the sun on a regular basis. Its bad enough with the wife thinking she is married to a bike, so best I keep the kit that goes with it clean and tidy

HAHAHA!!

Snap!

Maybe he must stop taking softener with his clothes, but rather a teaspoon of cement in his water bottles ;)

Even an old, part-time roadie like me gives him stick in the races ;) :P

She pours some vinegar into the washing machine and this somehow miraculously removes any traces of odor.

Definitely works like a charm! But not when it is dried by the Tumble drier.

I saw the topic and was about to ask if its First Ascent, none of my other cycling apparel smells, its only the Frist ascent stuff, and i treat all my laundry the same, so i stopped buying FA, its not dampness its something with the material they use.
