Best trick I learnt for my Garmin was how to plot paths/routes on Google Earth and then transfer them to my garmin unit. It's allowed me to spend evenings tracing and linking little paths and goat trails through the mountains on Google Earth in the comfort of the lounge. Then when I start my ride I know exactly where I'm going at all times. It makes long outrides in new/previously inaccessible areas a cinch.
