Bad service specialised concept store

Wow, you don't get a return a phone call and you bite like rattlesnake.

But then again, anyone who wants to buy a Spech deserves bad service http://1.1.1.3/bmi/cdn.bikehub.co.za/forum//public/style_emoticons/default/ph34r.png

When I was shopping around for a new bike last month around half the shops I called for bikes and prices didn't bother to call back! Shows how eager most LBS's are to make a sale and get some money in the bank.

Admittedly, it sounds like I did bite without being too provoked, but this was a build up of a string of bad experiences with them; to name just a few;

- December last year; remote cable to front shock snapped. I dropped the bike off with them and asked if they could fix it before I went away 4 days later. No problem they said. 3 Days later I went to go and collect the bike and to my surprise (a bad one), the mechanic had gone on leave without fixing my bike. No phone call, no time to make other arrangements before going away.

- Numerous attempts at trying to get stock through them, with no phone calls, follow up nada.

- I work in Melrose Arch so I would from time to time go in and follow up face to face. And every time I walked in I was still a stranger, and they seemed more surprised than I was when I asked about the stock I ordered a few weeks back.

So my first post was the culmination of MANY bad experiences there and I decided to vote with my wallet and not to go back.

And my second post yesterday was the experience of a good friend of mine, relatively new to cycling, whom they tried to rip off beyond what I could actually believe (R5500 for a bicycle service - not a bike, A SERVICE!!!).

And that is my final rant about this.

I would advise anyone looking for good service, good value, prices etc NOT to go to Spaz store Melrose Arch.

Fully agree - avoid. Whether its a bottle cage or a bike just go somewhere else.

lack of Specialized Stock availability has forced me to move on and away from this brand.

Turns out, it's been a good exercise!! I used to think all spez stuff was worlds ahead. Don't get me wrong, it is good stuff... But loving my maxxis icons, sidi shoes, giro gloves".... And loving that I can walk into lbs and buy off the shelf!!! Instead of pre ordering 4 months in advance...... And never getting the call to say stock has arrived...... And when you chase them they say." oh ya... The stock came in, but sold straight away"....

Here in Natal, you cannot buy a Spez from anyone exept from the Stander's, led by the old man Charles, they have a pokey little store in Shelly Beach (The Manager of this store is a very lekker guy and was very helpfull) a nice store in Waterfall, and end of November they are opening the first fully fledged Spez concept store in Ballito, to the exact same spec as the European stores. Rumour has it that the Standers were forced by Spez to open the R4mil store, or face the local exclusive agency being revoked and the brand sold to any LBS, this is a pity cos the attitude of the Stander family WRT to Spez sales leaves nothing to be desired. A take it or eff off attitude.

Spez fans in Ballito: Get the lube boys and prepare for a proper DBF!

So a mate of mine just called me;

He stoopidly took his bike to Spez concept store Melrose arch for a major service on a soft tail he bought there about a year ago....

Without quoting, they go and "service"the bike and call him with the invoice amount;

R5500!!!!

Includes;

- R2,000 for servicing front and rear suspension

- R3,500 for replacing big chainring and rear cassette - Oh and it aint no top spec bike either. SRAM X7 / Shimano XT components.

Does anyone other then me think that is a little bit more than excessive???!!!

R2000 is roughly about double what i would pay for a front and rear service down in kzn - prices are more expensive in jhb....but double?

rear cassette x7 is about R600? and front chainring about R800 odd so thats over R2k for labour......that is a major rip - but - the total bill was 5500 so what about the other parts of the service...were there not other parts and labour for the rest?

I would still *** myself if someone gave me a bill like that

There were a few bearings replaced and they must have replaced the chain if they did cassette and chainring. But still, R5500 - I just can't get there.

I Bought my Stumpjumper at Melrose Arch Spez Shop...

Cost me R28 000 - They did not even offer me a bike fitment and when I questioned them about it the told me it will be R950.

is it just me or is that absolutely Crazy?!?!? If i buy a bike For 28 000 surely the can set me up, make me coffee and buy me lunch for that price....

That shop hasn't seen me since! And never will....

Out of interest (and not that it matters) but what bike is it? Did he receive an itemised account for the service?

Bike shops are ridiculous, they are getting more expensive than garages and motorcycle workshops on a per hour rate.

agreed - chain and bearing equates to an additional 300 or 400 max

A little off tangent here : I am a noob to the sport and took my second hand bike to Concept Cyclery in Waterfall for a service and asked them to give me a call should there be any major expense. I completely expected to be fleeced. I received a call in the arvie and was told that my bike was ready to be collected. I asked the dreaded question and they informed me that the service had been done and the mechanic had no issues with the bike..no extra cost, they put me through to the mack and he said my bike was in good nick and the pads were still good.

I went through in the afternoon and picked up my bike. The mack came to see me and complimented me on my bikes condition and explained what they had done in the service. The bike was sparkling cleaned squeak free and when I took it for a ride was very happy. R280 well spent.

My bike is not a Specialized but I was not made to feel like second class citizen at any stage. I would certainly recommend them!

Before embarking on this service, the customer was advised and fully notified of the extent of parts being replced.

The following maintenance and replacement parts were done:

Protune Service

New Headset (all bearings)

New Cassette

New Chain

New Chainrings (not just one)

New FSR Bearing Kit

New Free Wheel Body

Tubeless Conversion

Fork Suspension Service/Rebuild

Rear Shock Service/Rebuild

Total R5113.51

You decide if it is unreasonable or not.

If you replaced all that then I would say its reasonable. But did everything need replacing? All 3 chainrings? A new headset? A new freewheel body?

Was the bike stuffed when it came in then?

you say before embarking, was this at the time the customer dropped the bike off (in which case how is it possible to define things to be replaced before the workshop worked on the bike)? or after the workshop check the bike over. The report here is bike was dropped of, with no call to customer, customer fetched and had bill, which implies customer was never phoned to approve the repairs/replacement.

As for the amount of work/replacements, seems excessive. what did the customer do, the Epic twice, as per the posting, the owner is a new MTB'er so can't imagine this type of ware on the bike.
