so I am falling further down the rabbit hole and would appreciate some feedback please.

I am looking for a smallish EDC, nothing overly fancy, but also not something that is a waste of time either.

At this point I am trying to define my budget, and it will be a budget....considering around the 500-700 mark, so an entry level decent knife.

I have held both the CRKT Squid and Pilar knives. They fit well and function smoothly. A little beefy, but feel like they will last. I prefer the blade shape on the Squid, but prefer the feel of the Pilar.

The I picked up a Spyderco Efficient https://www.knifeguy.co.za/collections/folding-knives/products/spyderco-efficient-c216gp which just felt like a far better build....but blows the budget.

The Honey Badger is ok, but just feels cheap in the hand ... comfort though is decent.

Now my first decent pocket knife was a Kershaw that I do this day regret loosing ... so this "brand" has a calling to me.

The simplicity of the Aplitude tickles my fancy, and I like the shape of the blade with the drop point

Another Kershaw that ticks the right boxes is the Link with the Tanto blade ... but again the budget is a little out.

Do any of you riff raff have any of these knives, or could recommend something similar ... not looking for a tactical knife, not really into that "mercenary look" and don't want to scare the living daylights out of people when I take it out for use.

I can't speak for any of those you asked about. But check out the Leatherman Crater I highly recommend it, in fact it is in my pocket right now.

This is my basic collection, and looking at it now I realise I have never bought a knife for myself before, they were either gifts or hand me downs.

Victorinox and Joseph Rodgers used to belong to my Grandfather. The JP is in need of some real care and attention.

when chatting to the staff at "Drifters Extreme Sport" they were also showing a Leatherman which was a fair bit bigger though, but they did note that it came with a 25 year quality guarantee, so if you chip or damage the blade they just replace it for you ... wonder if the Crater also will be covered.

Seems they do cover this one

I like the look of it ... and it also still comes with a pocket clip, nice.

I would pretty much say a pocket clip is essential if you want to ride with it. In the pocket of your baggies or under the lycra on your leg like Ed-Zulu explained above..

I've taken mine to be sharpened and they replaced a missing bolt in the pocket clip while I was waiting. No questions asked.

where did you buy yours from?

And their warranty is the bomb!!!

My Leatherman rebar multitool had one of the wire-cutter blades chip a few years back. That section is replaceable.

I dropped it off at CUM with the slip and they replaced the whole unit with a new one, complete.

Top service.......

In that price range I'd look at Spyderco's sub-brand, Byrd. Great quality and steel, reasonable prices. I've had a Byrd Raven for many years and it's a good quality knife. Good edc size.

For a more stainless option check out the Byrd Meadowlark 2 (8Cr13MoV) and for a non stainless option check out the Esee Zancudo (D2). Both available at KnifeGuy.

As others have said the Honeybadger is good value at the price point, I enjoy mine.  Have never been a big Kershaw fan myself, prefer the Honeybadger to my equivalent Kershaw despite it feeling less substantial. After that guess it depends what you want to pay.

One comment on tanto's, good for stabbing things but not great as an every day knife, find they are impractical for every day cutting and sharpening
