Could this be the end of Chappies for us?

Only if they apply the same lawas to the motorist.

That has nothing to do with it. We (the cyclists) are in the glass house here. We better not throw stones!

Never try and find a wrong to justify your own bad behaviour!

On the spot fine while taking down your ID number, which is on your med aid card / drivers license etc, and if you give false information they can fine you again for defeating the ends of justice. Quite easy really.

I only carry enough money for an energade but that should be enough to bribe the pol-ice

Feeling persecuted, guilty conscience much? I'm an up-country roadie (and yes, I do own a car!), so relax and stay within the rules. All will work out all right!

PPA should sponsor a speeding cameras for the accents! As mention a lot of the road has a 20km/h speed limit and max is 40km/h! While I was on the PPA committee last year I suggested this. After a few drivers have lost their licenses for doing twice the speed limit us cyclist will be 100% safe and for the faster ones even riding 4 abreast will be no problem as no car will dare overtake - not because of the fact we cyclist with a possible solid barrier line but because of speeding by motorist!

Once again it is motorist disobeying the laws of the roads and cyclist must take the wrap - I say NO! But then this morning I was riding 2 abreast in Richmond park London which has a 20 mile per hour speed limit which is enforced and car dare hoot at cyclists!

Champmans peak must also remember when it was closed PPA came to the party right at the start and gave R100 000.00 when that was a lot of money (then PPA only got about R200 000 from the ACT) as a donation with conditions towards the rebuilding of the drive the condition was that cyclist would be able to use the drive free of charge!

Hey look I don't like tourists much either but heck why give them a speeding fine for their accents? I think the German accent is quite cute on a 6 foot long legged big busted blonde.

The Spanish accent is my favourite, I just melt when the Spanish ladies jibber jabber to me in Spinach.

I also like riding two abreast. One breast is just no fun at all!!!

Im not surprised we're on the verge of being banned fro riding chappies.... Saturday morning was an eye opener for me - never seen such a blatant lack of accountability from anyone...particularly not adults who should have some sense....

Riding solo, had a great ride up chappies from the noordhoek side, decided to head down and climb from Hout Bay side as well.. thats where the fun started....

Group 1: Just where the construction begins, came across a group (dominated my Club 100 shirts, make your own assumptions) riding 3/4 abreast, no effort to move over but i managed to slow down enough to squeeze past. THANKS GUYS.

Group 2: Not too much further down, came across a second group. LITERALLY SPREAD ACROSS THE ENTIRE ROAD. to top it off, they retards that were on the wrong side(i.e in front of me trying to go downhill) were so busy admiring the scenery that they werent even watching the road ahead. Because i have more than 2 braincells to rub together i saw the danger in the situation and called out a 'heads up'. (exact words). after quickly moving over, the offending retards then proceeded to throw abuse at me!!! WTF!!!

I finished my descent, turned around and started heading back up. Seeing red by this point i was determined to catch up and have words with the main culprit, but when i caught up and saw how pitiful his attempt at climbing was, I couldnt. (Yes RETARD, that was me that came back past and rode your face through the floor).

Interestingly enough, i caught up with the first group as well. Still riding 4 abreast. once i hit the top i thought of waiting to point out the fact that these are the reasons why we're gonna get banned. Unfortunately ALL the offending parties took too damn long, i couldnt wait all day.

My thoughts: If you want a tea party - stay at home. If you want a chat - call a friend. And if you cant ride up chappies (or any climb for that matter) without giving other road users the respect they deserve, piss off and dont ruin it for the rest of us.

  • 5 weeks later...

The only problem with South African road cyclists is that nearly all them are also South African motorists.

Naturally cyclists apply the same ethics and level of consideration to riding a bike as they do to piloting their motor cars. Ethics I hasten to add, that were nearly always learned behind the wheel, not sitting on top of a saddle*.

When other motorists see fellow drivers on bicycles for a change, the 'f*ck you' instinct kicks in and it becomes a great opportunity to demonstrate that they have a bigger vehicle / cock / ego / sense of urgency or whatever.

The spread of wrongdoing is more or less equal for both groups - although only if you remove alcohol from the equation - in which case the drivers are a far more culpable bunch.

Obviously the noteworthy difference is that the potential for mortal injury always resides with the tool piloting the two ton hunk of metal.

* more and more I think that this is the dividing line between a sane cyclist and a two-wheeled lemming / inconsiderate tool.

I am surprised that no one has complained about how the tour guides ride their cars, mini vans, mini bus or even bus around chappies, what about cars in general, and how they block the road when they want to look at somthing and not pull into a parking bay.

So it is not just cyclists on chappies, it is the general public with their bad attitude

Why are so many people trying to justify shocking cycling by the behaviour of other vehicles? That's completely irrelevant here... People are commenting on cyclists riding like chops and the simple fact is that there are a lot of cyclists who do ride like chops (and not only on Chappies!). Stop trying to justify it and just ride in single file on the side of the road and then we don't need to worry about what everyone else is doing as we are all out of their way. Even if you are riding in a group of 20 people, you can still ride in single file! It is possible...

Its ridiculous that it has come to this because of a few inconsiderate cyclists that think they own the road. What say the hubbers?

If you see a bunch acting like a douche then call them on it. The more times they get a word the more they'll realise that they are in the minority.

That's one of the things surfing has right, you get called on bad behaviour from when you are a grom. Across the world if you're in a new spot and not being respectful someone will let you know quick smart.
