Ja, I have to agree people dont worry anymore. I have noticed this in tokai as well. Guys rush pass you like some medical emergency, I am fairly chilled when I go riding, mainly because I am there to enjoy myself, I dont have any goals set. People dont greet but at least I make the effort to see if he is gonna look and then greet. I will always ask someone if they ok when I see them standing or walking. I have received lots of snide comments in tokai, like I didnt know hikers walk with bikes, this one is classic, I will always reply who you racing. So ja, it is just a K... attitude of some, or probably I am better than you syndrome.. you know what, dont stress about it, someday you will come across them strnaded and change their world when you help!

It's sad, but it is not the mountain bikers that are to blame.

South Africans are to blame, we are becoming a selfish nation.

Thanks Dangle, I do believe you have just solved the entire riddle. I never thought of it that way

Do you greet every motorist you pas on the road? Or just guys in the same car as you?

Wow - you have 4 posts and 7 likes....you must have said something profound at one point.......looks like that trend has come to an end with this inane comment

Not stopping to offer someone technical assistance, well that just sucks, but also not carrying the tools needed to sort out a basic mechanical is reckless, and in a race situation it is plain selfish

I greet everybody I pass on training rides, but if you're gonna wait to be greeted back by everybody around you, then you're probably riding too slow! ;-)

You know what I fins hilariously funny. I've ridden on the road with these guys for years, they know me and my kit by now and yet when I'm on the MTB and they come past they never greet me.

Its also becoming a money thing...tube = 50 bucks, bomb ten bucks. So if you stop to help someone you are in for 60 bucks and you have to make peace with it. After helping everyone I could when I started out I don't do anymore when I see someone battling with a puncture. Anything else I will stop and assist. I simply cannot afford it to be honest.

No for sure, a puncture is something that happens to us all. You should always be prepared. A chain snapping or a bent deraileur in not such so common. When someone pushes a bike is must be serious. I always stop and help then. Just a "are you okay" also is good manners.

And for some also a weight thing.. I've seen way to often riders avoiding to carry extras with them to save weight, and then someone else in the bunch or some passerby needs to sponsor a tube, bomb, lube, chainlink etc.

Not sure why people get their panties in knot about this greeting thing, sometimes, often actually people's response to not being greeted or given a return greeting is more telling and just as bad.

If that affects your ride, then you're doing it wrong, get over it.

Couldn't even venture a guess to the number of times I've not received a reply to greeting, or not greeted someone else. On a crowded trail like the Spruit it's more often than not just silly to be greeting every other person or expecting a greeting/acknowledgement.

Riding somewhere more remote like vG, different scenario. At the end of the day, how does it REALLY affect your ride?

First world problems, sigh.

I am reasonably new to Cycling in general. Started Earlier in the year with my father to train for IM in future sometime. Since we started everyone we pass we greet. Sometimes there aint no breath and a head nod is all thats left. Even had times where thats not even possible. However since starting I greet walkers, workers, MTB, Road or gate guards. Usualy we get friendly respones but if we dont well to bad. Greeting someone takes nothing away from you and might just make someone else think Hell world is still a nice place. My 2c.
