I couldn't turn a 2h39 94.7 into a sub 3 Argus. (Came in at 3h00m37s) and the weather was GOOD this year. Only the first 481 positions got sub 3 braging rights this year.

The thing that makes that sub 3 so illusive is the fact that Argus is 15km further than 94.7.

At 30km/h 15km takes 30mins... 45km/h to do 15km in 20mins...

You need to be quick for sub 3. That and you need to be at the front of the pack when the breaks happen at Smits, Chappies and Suikerbossie.

You need to have a group that works TOGETHER to do the sub-3 from one of the front groups - 6 - 10 people who work together should be able to crack it if they co-operate - given a decent sub E start group.

Since we asking...last road race I did was the Knysna race that was shortened from 100km to 80km. Did it in 2hours23min, Anyone want to hazard a guess as to how far that's off a sub 3 Argus?

ALL THE HEAVY HITTERS WILL come on now and say "its easy, its nothing",, personally i think if you clock a sub 3 you earn bragging rights

IMHO

Only Epic hero's have bragging rights... and TDF, Giro or that Spanish thing finishers... :)

Weather is more important than staring group.

Dont expect your 94.7 sub 3 to be anything close to an Argus sub 3

argus is longer and subject to hectic wind or heat.

You have to average 37km/h at Argus or you can forget about it - easier said than done.

WHAAAT

No way! Every man and his dog would be able to do a Sub-3

My 20min w/kg is around 3.8.

And I have gone under 3.

But like most guys have said........

Start group and weather will be your main challenges.....

A guess. Your three hour bell will ring just as you crest Suikerbossie.

OUCH

Maybe I should've added that mine normally rings on that hill.In my own experience the just over 30 km/h average in the local races has never been good enough to even get me to a sub 3.30.

Quite a bit. I did the Knysna in 2h09 and the Argus in 3h01. Guessing around 3h20.

I disagree, but it's moot point anyway since you can't control the weather.

I'm sure of all the sub3 results:

90% have been recorded by riders in groups D or better.

5% have been recorded by riders in higher groups who worked well together on the day in perfect weather

5% have been recorded by really good riders with *** seedings for whatever reason who basically timetrialled it. in perfect weather.

Like someone stated earlier your starting group is probably the most important. To be honest 3hrs for the Argus is a very avg time. 2h45 is a good time in my books.......and no I have never done that time but it is a good goal
