Hey guys,

I'm new to the tri-scene and the area, but would like to get some swimming done in the sea for ironman training. Are there some of you who swim there regularly as I am a bit concerned about safety, ie sharks, not knowing the area and all.

Thanks

Rather go and swim at Silvermine if you are worried about Sharks. There is also the 1st Swim of the month - first Sunday of every month at Clifton 4.

Thanks Blacksmith, why not swim at bluerock ? It is clean water, safe, and a lap is about 1km give or take. You can use the water to swim any time from 8 am - 10 am and from 5pm till late. They might even put the lights on for you .....

Dont know where these guys get there facts from, just shows, don't believe everything you read on forums.

From me, I'd say go for it, I grew up swimming there and never heard of any sharks problems

I was in the navy there in GB.. swam everynight/Early morning from 2300-0300 in the morning for training, no problem. Went round from the base to bikini beach aswell as towards spur. The navy has been swimming there since forever without shark incident. One night we even crossed the bay from the harbour to harbour Island to go have a dop at berties (but thats another story;) )

Sharks in GB are mostly raggies and bronzies which are harmless don't hassle anyone, know a few guys that fish there and the catches on sharks not that great from the breakwater.

Very little activity from the Big eye's, as there is no food.. They feed on seals.

Circumstances have changed with the increased activity of great white sharks in the Bay.

Maybe years ago it was cool. Now is a different reality.

I also grew up at the ocean (east london) and was a lifegaurd. I have gotten over the 'fear' ages ago - but above no one stated facts but rather their opinion on that particular area. If you are somenoe who freeks when you see a shadow then maybe seek an area with offer more peace of mind or a group swim like the 1st swim of the month. The V&A canals are also becoming very popular.

Whole lot of exaggerated fearmongering this shark nonsense. You are way safer swimming in the sea than cycling on the road. That being said I swim in Silvermine dam rather than Fishhoek, but its also a pollution thing, False Bay is a bit of a sewer

This afternoon I did a quick 1.5 km in Durban bay at lunch. Water was brown from the hectic weekend rains; most times I couldn't see my hand when outstretched at the catch. Have to admit I did feel a little exposed, esp considering zambies become more active inshore in these conditions.

If I can see I have no problems. If I'm swimming blind then it becomes a little spooky.

So while I also have a chuckle at the inlanders who sh~t for their shadows in knee deep water, I still give props to braailegend for swimming in false bay in the middle of the night. That's a step too far for me.
