Is using my phone's GPS also against the law? Or is it only talking?

You touch your phone whilst driving and you lose. R500 fine a couple of years back for ending a call whilst I was on a hands free earpiece. Was in black and white on a little laminated board the Metro Crook pulled out. He was fishing for a bribe and I wouldn't bite. What made it worse is that in my pee'ed off haste I forgot my driver's licence on his clipboard. Expensive day.

Havent always understoof this either - surely eating a handburger, getting it out the wrapping, making sure you dont spill on yourself ect is surely as distracting as talking on a phone?

No way! you don't have to think to eat. Then again a few I know don't have to think to talk. So maybe yes.

I can actually understand the talking and texting thing, because I've done it before and then for the life of me can't remember that part I've just driven! I think they've actually done studies of the brain to show how it affects you.

But using the smartphone for other things, e.g. GPS, should not be illegal. Like the comment then what about touching or handling anything in the car. Another law with good intentions, but not thoroughly thought through. Maybe they should make a "drive" mode.

yet you can graze on a steers burger and chips while drivinghuh.png .....I had an argument with a traffic cop at a traffic light who told me I was not allowed to handle my phone while driving (i was busy putting it into the hands free).

I have a thing about people who hold their phone and talk while driving (and usually slow down or speed up) but using it through hands free is fine in my opinion. In fact.......People should actually have to pass a test to even do that as some people subconsciously slow down while talking regardless of whether its in a hands free or not
