The new Reign 2 is looking good - if it is R30k it will be a bargain. Most of the Giant brand kit is good quality and you can upgrade as things wear out...

On a mtb fork the crown get angled out ...the circle is perpendicular...when a train leaves PTA...how the hell does one explain this without standing next to a fork?!

You can see in the pic the crown (top where the caps are) is angled towards the front. In other words not in line with the steerer. That is off set. It varies from 40 - 46 on 26 / 27.5 bike and goes up to 51mm on 29ers.

Here's a great article on the effect as well as pro's and cons.

How these measurements affect stability :

Rake and Trail:

Fork Rake is also known as Offset, which more accurately describes what it is: the hub’s offset from the steering axis. Not to be confused with the curvature of the fork blades, which some people think of as “rake”. Straight blade forks can have plenty of offset. Fork offset determines trail when considered with head angle (and the diameter of the wheel). Trail is best thought of as the tire patch “trailing” behind the steering axis. Fork offset for road bikes usually ranges from 40 to 55 mm, generating trail figures from 50 to 63 mm. 57mm of trail is considered by many to be an ideal combination of stability and agility. More trail is nice at high speeds (motorcycles usually have 80 mm of trail) but can feel sluggish at slower speeds.

Last one from me on this for now (my beer is getting cold). I for one believe in the benefit especially on the new breed of super slack trail / enduro bikes. Some 29ers are designed around more off set. Riding my Vipa back to back with a 51mm vs 46mm off set fork made a noticeable difference and worked wonders to counter the "29er effect".

Haven't done the same exercise on a long travel trail / Enduro bike, but for now I'd be willing to say they're onto something. So much so that I've spoken to one or two guys to check whether it's possible to do the same mod aftermarket and it seems so.

Should I go with a stupid slack bike next, I'll definitely build it with a 46mm off set Pike.

Prost!
