[Event] NISSAN TRAILSEEKER #3 Van Gaalens

I was in the (un)fortunate position of hearing the race briefing (and jokes and stories) given to every single bunch... It was categorically stated to each and every bunch to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and to stop at the water tables and drink but not waste the water. It was also categorically stated to ride in your limits and to be very careful on the downhill. The dangers of the downhill section and the sharp turn at the bottom were stressed as much as the hydrate aspect. Definitely nothing more could have been done by the organisers. Some people would clearly just rather feel than listen. (Or should they hand out ear buds and tell everyone to clear out their ears before the next briefing? Maybe start wiping people's bums for them too?)

Hey blitzer us dirt roadies walked loads so I ended up finishing in 4:30.

So you don't care that there were many injuries, including punctured lungs SeanN and allies? That info about the injuries comes from Erik (the main man at VG) who was helping with the medics co-ordination, and was chatting to a local Doctor about this whilst I had to wait for him.

I enjoy the route, and done many events there, (and had my own fair share of body plants) certainly don't want it dumbed down BUT I reckon more could be done to help those who are not up on the skills to avoid injury. That does not involve or mean changing the route or making it easier, so chill out on that one. I reckon that could even be argued in a court of law. Maybe it will if there is a very serious injury, like spinal cord damage.

Whats your point?? I still dont get it...

Am I gonna do a 15m gap jump because everyone has told me about it, not a chance, I dont have that skill and Im not gonna attempt it, I WILL WALK AROUND IT.

If the rocks are too big for you to ride or descents too scary, dont ride it... dont bitch about it.

If you fall, you fall, too bad... get up and move your butt to the medic.

I have fallen plenty, do I whine... not a faarken chance.

They must go play chess and check their mates

Its simple, ride within your limits and be prepared, thats all I have to say

But he makes a rather valid point.

And I will clarify with this.

The chaps doing the marathon, they don't have the right to complain, the distance gets longer, the toughness increases and the route becomes more technical.

They need to deal with it and HTFU, they signed up for it.

The moms, kids, housewives and pensioners who do the 20's and 40's, they need a much more accommodating route, I do firmly believe that by making it more pleasurable for them, it could grow the sport.

Was thinking of this today, wouldn't it be easy if every MTB event had a standardized rating system between 1- 5, lets say the dunblane classic was ur first u would think this sport is easy, just to show up at VG and leave a lung behind!

Most trail builders would be able to rate thier own event, problem is if u have to many 5 events u lose out on the newbie income! Scaring them away never to return.... They all go to northerns from what I've heard.

Sure I'm not the first to come up with this but if I am it will be called the BBRC scale.... Don't ask u don't wanna know.

A court of law, grief. Already that indicates a cultural problem of avoiding responsibility to one's self.

What would your suggestion be then, what more could be done?

Given that the event has been running for a number of years now and the route description in itself is widely known, it's safe to say that more than enough reasonable measures have been taken.

Newbies or not, at what point do grown adults take responsibility for themselves and do just the basics of informing themselves before an event?

It's an outdoors/adventure sport, by it's very nature it the ultimate responsibility rests on the individual.
