And the 'bought for the argus' the week after the race.

Don't forget the "this bike has done a sub 3 Argus" ads. :D

I am very hesitant to ask because I know it "puts you out there" by asking, but here goes: what does it take to do a sub 3? How many training hours per week? Other results that can indicate the possibility of success? Starting bunch? I know weather etc. cannot be predicted.

Last year only riders in B and higher managed to break sub 3. In my opinion you have to be in A to stand a decent chance or in B and stay at the front of the pack. Anything lower and you'll be time trialling it by yourself.

In terms of training it would differ from person to person, but I can't imagine doing less than 12-15 hours a week and still being able to go sub 3 (but that's just me, I'm sure most people could do it on much less).

If the wind is up on the day though, all bets are off.

Jip, I hear you. I think it will stay a fantasy for me. I struggle to get to 9h a week.

Properly trained, with the right genetics - you should be ok for a sub 3 on 9 hours a week - given reasonable weather and a good start group.

But you ARE going to hurt in that 9 hours a week...

A sub 3 Argus is not easily achieved. Takes natural talent and a lot of hard work.

At one stage I put in 15hr weeks, but never managed to get that elusive sub 3. So obviously I do not have the natural (or enough) talent.

Another thing not to forget is that you should be able to climb fairly well.

Although not a lot of climbs if you loose the bunch , you loose a lot of time.

Lost my bunch at Smitswinkel last year. The bunch finished in 2:53 and I did 3:02. Was easy to stay in the bunch up to that point so if I got over that hill I would have made it. So work on those hills. I train between between8-10 hours a week. But then again I fell short.

I agree, Sub 3 no trivial achievement And even more difficult if you don't have age & talent on your side!

To put it in perspective - this year you had to finish in the top 1.5% of the field and within 20 minutes of the winners to achieve a sub 3.

I was about 10 minutes out this year. might as well been 1/2 hour given the amount of effort I would need to put in to make up those 10 minutes

For your information, the graph shows my training leading up to the 2011 Argus in which I did a sub 3h. In 2012 I crashed after 5km, but continued and finished just outside 3h. I'll try to also get my 2013 training data.

Week 1 is from 3 to 9 January 2011 and the Argus was during week 10. The period included 6 x Wednesday Killarney races, 3 x normal weekend races, 5 x League races and 2 x Tuesday Track leagues.
