Probably Hilti - make sure you are sitting down when you are advised of the replacement price! They mainly deal with professional contractors on a full service basis, where price doesn't really matter. But there is no magic in the drill.

It was a Hilti indeed, I wouldnt mind one of them, just dont really have that kind of use for one.

Hilti are top quality tools but i don't believe technologically-wise they have anything on a Bocsh Blue or Makita, except perhaps duty cycle. Their niche is the pro contractor market who need 100% up-time, they offer all kinds of services to make sure this happens, so the high cost is beyond the actual cost of the tool. My niece was a rep for them for a while. always on the road, sorting out clients. OTT for the prosumer IMHO, unless you have deeeeep pockets.

Any recommendations on who to go to to have cordless tool batteries replaced by generic equivalents in the Jhb northern areas?  Have some Bosch blue tools that the batteries are on their way out on.

If you want to get adventurous with a soldering iron - most of the Lithium Ion types take the standard 18650 format cells which one gets in various mA-hour ratings, where to source these locally ??? loads on ebay, some are fake ratings though

If you want to get local good quality 18650's then the vaping shops are the place to go, pretty much all of them run off 18650 cells.

Problem is many brands have protection circuits on their li-ion battery packs and replacing the cells triggers this and renders them unusable. You can get replacement chips or whatever the parts are needed on ebay for some makes or alternatively you can disable the battery monitoring circuits on the battery and sometimes also required to do that on the tool itself, which is a little dodgy.

This is true and they sell the correct high drain 18650 cells that are needed for cordless power tools, not cheap though, might not be a whole lot less than just buying a whole brand new battery.

Branded 3400mAh 18650 go for around $10 from China, I have asked at the local 'compatible' laptop batteries wholesaler for a local source they couldn't really say who wholesale sells them, although most laptop battery packs have them inside.

Some cells have that protection circuit built in and are a bit taller (it will be stated),  Lithuim Ion batteries need that to manage charging and discharging current otherwise they can overheat even catch fire, but surely those in the battery packs of power tools are just the cells with a Battery Management System for the array.. Every Lithuim Ion battery setup needs that BMS whether on the cells or upstream.

I'm more interested in these for larger scale energy storage, that's how come I've tried to keep up to speed with developments. These cells are used in big packs on the likes of Tesla cars.

I'll check what those vaping stands cell the 18650's for but I don't think there they will be at an attractive price. They are also used on RC cars, drones etc, have become popular for bright LED torches (bike lights, diving torches) they make any other battery tech look puny in comparison, high energy density and many charge-discharge cycles, no memory effect etc

I checked prices for you with a hubber with a vape shop already - 160 - 180 for a 3000mah battery

Quite pricey but those are typically for very high quality cells from Samsung/Panasonic/Lg/Sony and some rated up to 30A continuous discharge, bad ass cells, completely different league to cells used in low drain applications like laptops. Edited by Skylark

Yup thats exactly the thing with them, they are very high quality and very high drain rates. The risk of explosion on things like mech mods means that only the good stuff is sold.

You should check the 20700 batteries, the joyetech ones I have are rated at 3600mah and 45A continuous drain.

Yeah it took me a while to even work out that they were not specialised shapes and different batteries for all the power tools but rather differing casings and arrays of generics, but don't really have the time and skills/inclination for the DIY route hence looking for a reputable someone who does it commercially.

there is a SHOP that does EXACTLY this, in a shopping center right opposite Milnerton race stables, will try to get more info, have used them before, affordable and pretty quick, too.

Cheers
