I foresee one problem with this. Not sure if it works this way with cycling but it absolutely does with marathon and ultra distance running.

Say you are at best capable of 2:50 but you go through half way at 2:45 pace you are going to k@k for the second half and will probably finish outside 3 Hours as you pay back big time over the hilly second half.

If you go through at 2:55 pace, you may be strong enough to make it up over the second half and could finish in 2:52.

Obviously the ideal would be to know your ideal pace and stick to the appropriate intensity level to give you your 2:50, but I suspect not many of us have enough data to predict what that is for any given race.

Comments ?

If you know the route and have ridden it a number of times, you SHOULD know what is possible.

I've got ride data for the following times:

2:21

2:35

2:45

2:55

3:01

3:03

3:13

4:06 (MTB)

4:25 (MTB)

5:15 (MTB)

As far as I could follow (this thread), the I, J & K group riding together wants to do a sub-3, correct?

To get a sub 3 you to need to be at the turn into Witkoppen road (Douglasdale) before 1:20, possibly 1:25 if you're a strong finisher. This has been valid since they changed the route to go past Ellis Park (2009 onwards, I think).

Last year, i did a 3:01 ride time with an extra 7 minutes stationery (puncture) out of the D batch - possibly close to one of my worst days on a bike.

In terms of pace, if the "K-group ride" want to use it as a benchmark for "behind/ahead" of schedule, I can load it as the virtual partner on Garmin.

What is the estimated time to get on and get off the N14 highway in order to do a sub 3?

1:45 to get to N14

2:20 get off N14

Not really, you won't believe how stupid people get when they see red.

I had a mate who did 94.7 a few times, the last one he did happened to be when we all started in the group he was in, we fell back to ride with him, I think it was D.

When we hit that freeway going to Jo'Burg he hit Porsche mode.

Rode that the gob was making his head look like Saturn.

I thought he was chasing a Toreros or even worse a redneck Yank trying to impress his mates at the rodeo.

Well needless to say, before we even peeled off to go in to the city, his positive was not making contact with his negative, he had all sorts of battery acid pouring from his pores and I could even hear little yelps of "mommy, mommy...."

I looked at this appalling sight of a human who soaked his brain in Jik the night before (at least that's what it looked like)

And thought to myself, vandag gaan jy jou eie les leer pêl.

Afterwards in the beer tent ,just an hour after I cracked my first bottle of golden liquid, was when our little Hulk came through the finish to claim his medal.

And most of us will know, that medal is worth less than the chocolate ones you get at Woollies, especially the fact that the rest of us had a relatively chilled ride at 2:35.

What Eddy says about applying some savvy to the heroism, well it rings as true as an NG kerk klok on a Sondag oggend, even if the Dominee is still pulling the rope whilst wearing his wife's lingerie.

2:20 sounds about right for getting off the N14. You can do it in less but then you need to have something left in the tank and probably be in a group for some part of Summit road. That last bit can hurt real bad if you are left with too much to do.

Still waiting for my re-seeding.

I received a phone call this morning to say that my re-seed application was successful after I had sent them all my previous results and racing group.
