I don't think it would be worthwhile to build more trails yet... Not until it becomes a viable format. Yes there will be long'ish rides to the start of stages, but initially we should use the trails we have (I think) and sort out some other the other logistics (like timing) and also gauge interest.

Yea good call, maybe he can adjust ito what he has just a little to give it more gradient...it wouldn't mean cutting new trails from scratch.

Areas I know of...

Daggapad

Poffader

Revenge

Greek Church

Tant miems aka pomphuis

The river although sweet is too flat me thinks, but might be worthwhile

Kings Kloof in Kruger's dorp.

It is known as a place for "afkak" due to the nature of the route that involves a lot of climbing. However. looking at the enduro format, it presents some sections that is ideal for descending.

It's the main reason I normally go there, work on the ups, to get to the descents which are really enjoyable. add in some gap jumps, skinnies etc... and you have a winner.

Yea forgot about King's...the stages will be short though, but you can lots of them to make up for distance.

I was just going to suggest this spot. I've never ridden there, but all the stories I've heard have been about technical descents and challenging terrain...

last year's Silverstar race had a descent that is normally used as an climb in KK, went full taps from the start of the race, so that there was no traffic for that section...it was kickass. completely hit the wall 5km's later, but it was worth it.

if you are willing to lug your DH machine up the mountain - the downs will be very satisfying. I have often thought if i lived on that farm, i woulld NEVER leave and just ride my bike there all day long.

Kings kloof would be good, what about thaba trails? Maybe just not long/big enough. The problem with vg as it it's now it's just too spread out. Unless new trails were cut into a dedicated section. It has the most potential I think.

I'd be happy to chip in.

After the top section there's still a decent amount of descending to be done-if eric cut in some more technical trails on the lower part Oom Piets could definately work for an enduro stage

Klapperkop in Pretoria have potential?? Some elevation to work with and a easy tar road to climb to the top. The stages might not be so long but can work as a "mini-enduro"?

What can we do to get the ball rolling on the enduro front in Gauteng?

I reckon van Gaalens will be best venue to have a 1st Enduro in Gauteng, yes there will be long transitions, but then maybe spread it over Sat and Sunday, have 3 stages on Sat and 3 stages on Sunday, and plenty of time for beer afterwards..

Possible stages:

Pofadder,

the new "enduro" section above Dagga pad,

the singletrack nect to the gravel road after Dagga pad,

Greek Church (do the singletrack climb after Greeg Church in reverse).

Standard Dagga pad and river sections are too flat

Thaba Trails can make good venue as well, but stages will be very short I think, same with Kingskloof

The Hartbeespoort cable car area has lots of potential as well, one cab create a world class enduro trail there, it wont be for sissies..

Yea defnitely, but with a new starting point on the right of that thorn tree at the top of dagga you can blixem down at great speed me thinks....It could be the best of them all, enough gradient, enough rocks...singletrack all the way baby. We would need to convince Eric that it is worthwhile though. Also like the idea of an Enduro "stage" race over two days...

You see what the guys at Enduro World series have to ride, from latest news " 2300m in climbing and descending over approximately 60km"

At VG the distance is about the same, just the climbing will be less!

Going to Kings in the morning. Thought about there as well. Just the issue of the short descents. Didn't think about flipping them though, that could definitely work.

The Enduro format does seem like short intense bursts. 3-5km max (under correction), although there are the European legs that have the epics built into them eg, Megavalanche etc.

I think that is where Mankele got their initial idea from, where the stages are 15-20 mins for the top guys, and have a fair amount of climbing.

Ideally I reckon we need to convince land owners to build into the side of the ridge lines along the magalies etc, and develop a long point to point drop with multi switchbacks, that should create a good flow and have tons of length, but will take a good while to develop.
