I'm in the "race has got too big" category.

Used to love these races but waiting to park, waiting to collect number, getting to pen 45 mins before start etc has ruined it for me. Alas these races are a victim of their own success - great races arranged by great people - just too many people now.

For 2014 I'm gonna be hitting the "non franchised" races...

Kinda agree with Eldron here but I must add that the last Nissan race in 2013 was great despite the numbers. Proper seeding and proper route planning prevented bottle necks. Not sure that Red Barn can cope with the numbers.

Hopefully it wont be a repeat of last year where the route wasn't marked properly and some riders only completed half the distance.

PS: Which races Eldron??

Oom - I'll let you know as I find them.

Mostly they're small town races and I only hear about them a month or two before the event.

Nissan/USN etc. No more!

Hi-jack - Are there any races out there not affiliated to CSA ?

Technically it cannot be a cycling race if not afilliated with csa.

But I cant see how CSA will or can stop you from hosting a ride with some buddies, and the guy who reaches the designated finish point first maybe gets a sixpack of beers for his efforts? You can even invite all you hub mates along to make it even more enjoyable.

This will be my 2nd ever race, having done the 30 km event at Babba's in December. I am having a go at the 50km ride this time. A little bit of congestion might be exactly what I need to prevent myself from going out too fast.

Can anyone advise what I can expect in terms of water points. I am not sure that my 2l camelbak & 1 water bottle will be enough for this distance. I will need to restock on the hydration at least once along the way.

This is where the real fun, camaraderie, sportsmanship and interesting people are......while also having some serious track. Events such as Magoebaskloof, Rust de Winter, Sondela and "Forest2Falls" (Graskop) are diamonds in the rough. Maybe it is time to start a thread (events page) for the less commersialised races in order to support the communities and clubs that organise them. You don't ride them, you experience them.

If you do this, after a while you will end up with another "the race is too congested" situation. Its a catch22.

I am all for selectively entering events based on enjoyment. Thats why i am doing the usn at red barn. Witht he right attitude and expectations this race is great.

I see the entries are closed due to capacity being reached  and I was about to buy my entries

I seem to remember that last year capacity was reached as well but people could still enter on race day. However I am not 100% sure if that was the case but thinking about trying my luck.
