The Hub SA - What has it become, and where is it going?

I have you pegged as a person of colour, not caucasian,

This is like Herschelle Gibbs all over again. I have no idea what colour anyone on this forum is. Unless they explicitly say it.

It's like their sexual preference (straight/homosexual/bisexual) unless they make it a thing, no-one would even know.

100% wrong, you are taking this the wrong way. I get called that word just about everyday in my 'hood, so I reserve the right to use it lightly.

If you so feel. However, I take offense, as do many other. So please go amend your statement to remove offensive terms. No need to attempt to offend to try and make a statement in hindsight.

If you have an issue with the racial profile of cycling / sport / society / wealth, start a legitimate topic on that without using offensive, flame-baiting terms. Unless you genuinely are attempting to flame-bait, then leave everything as it is

To respond to the OP's question, I honestly believe the answer lies with the owner of this forum. It would be incredibly helpful if Matt could articulate his vision for the Hub, and how he believes we can get there. Merely moderating posts and banning folks who don't follow rules, says nothing about what the commercial drivers are for the Hub, and how we as an online community with a real life common passion can contribute to those drivers.

I have you pegged as a person of colour, not caucasian, so irrespective of platitudes your U word is as offensive to some as the K or N word is to others

At the risk of getting another reply delete, depends on what context its used and I dont believe its nearly as offensive as the K word, and has been a generic term for white people for a long time, perhaps a first-lanuage Zulu speaker can comment.

As for my race: the human race! White ou with a black soul (and brown wife and daughter)

I am going to wade into this against my better judgement.

Chat rooms/forums/the internet, do not have space for context. To many people read, and then hear in their minds what they want to hear, infer what they want to infer and draw a conclusion, even though they (that) may not be a part of that conversation/chat/fight/whatever. Thus chats between a few people, get read by many, and some take offense at the what is being said and used.

The answer is complex in its simplicity. Sort your own thoughts out before you try sort out those of others. If you know certain things offend, then do not do them. It is not that hard really. Respect others. And on any internet forum site, don't take offense at what others say. Simple really.

Good point slowbee, and that's certainly the issue here. But does that stop us from raising / discussing difficult issues without getting personal? Always seems to end up that way. Which is what this thread is about, and this serves as a good example as to how things can go south.

Problem all is with the Internet and writing, you cant hear tonal expressions or see facial expressions, which in this case would have made clear that the use of that term was a self-depreciating humorous reference, with no intention to offend and apologies to anyone it did.

BTW, breaking news is that the Jamaican bobsled team has qualified for Sochi Olympics. Seriously.

So I think we should just cheeeel, Winston!

Who care what race anyone is?

The word(umlungu)refers to " the white scum/foam that from the sea",i.e the foam generated by waves in the surf - a reference to the white people who emerged from the sea so many years ago

Originally a derogatory term (which it may still be) , but almost universally used to describe white people. It apparently has many meanings, all of which depend on context and inflection. The pejorative will be so,in context of a situation or discussion.

Doesn't bother me in the least.

..........Off-topic baiting threads = avoid.

Yeah, wise people see the fight before it happens and avoid it. Much easier than sorting things out after it went through the fan.

So by your reckoning umlungu is OK to use. I know that nigg*r / k*ffir / etc are not.

So you, as mod for the forum (where context cannot be attributed - due to search engines / hot links etc) accept and approve insulting caucasians while we(all of us, of ALL colours / creeds / races) as a society demonize those that insult people of non-caucasian decent?

Sadly, despite your work as moderator, you are steadily portraying yourself as a bigot!

If a racial reference offends even one it should not be used. Such is the PC-ness of the world we live in.

Point taken.

I agree, to a point.

It just doesn't bother me personally.

I've been a chef for 20+ years, and I've always been the umlungu. I have been called that by people who would lay down their lives for me, such is their loyalty.

Again, my 2c, my experience.

Ys, such was my relationship with the k word, and people it could describe. However, people I do not even know take offence from it and hence it has become a completely taboo word. None of the k, u or n words then! And that is for EVERYBODY at ALL times.

It so depends on the environment, intention and perspective it is used in. My personal experience is for instance where a black person will use the K-word towards another black person with no problems. Now just tweak the situation a little bit and change some of the variables (relaxed to tense environment, black to white, banter to slander) and you have an IQ, EQ and just overall common sense meltdown.

Read my post again. Don't think my post, or hear my post, or infer my post, rather read my post.

There is no space for context on internet forums. Simple.

EDIT:

As for my position as a mod, I would draw your attention to the fact that your posts and those of others have been hidden, and are under review from the team.
