Stolen Bikes in Stellenbosch

Sulli

Recommended Posts

My bike was stolen today from the varsity campus.

Campus security said more bikes are stolen than they can do paper work for.

They cut straight through my bike lock in broad day light and was spotted heading towards Kayamandi. Please keep an eye out, one of a kind.

Take a drive through kayamandi and you wil see the bikes the disadvantaged are riding. Makes me want to be disadvantaged too. Even spotted 2 bergies last year pushing a trolley while wearing specialized helmets

But then that is probably the appropriate use for a Specialised helmet.......

Songo - do you folks have some eyes on the ground? With an expensive sport like mountain biking being encouraged in impoverished communities like Kayamandi then I'm not surprised that this is happening.

Why is stellenbosch/somerset west being hammered so hard with bike thefts in particular?

Must be a syndicate, only reason for such a severe spike, basically all the local criminals now have a buyer(syndicate) and therefore big incentive to steal bikes in particular. Sux

I have seen today 2 African men walking with 3 rims on their way to a scrap meatl dealer from Kayamandi direction. Can it be that they are selling the parts for scrap?

never understood why the youngsters need to have specialized bikes surely you can get 2 or even 3 bike for the price of the 0nes they have, like storm 78 said when you go past there it looks better to be disadvantaged

You are spot on. The sport should be reserved for us folk earning 7 digit annual salaries and cars that cost more than most folk's houses.

<sarcasm off incase you were wondering>

I had the privilege to help out one of the Songo riders on Sunday's race with something as simple as a multi-tool. They had decent road bikes, but there was only one multi-tool between 6 of them. The last 2 got seperated from their friends in the decent down Helshoogte (because one had a seatpost that was slipping down) and was stranded with a seatpost that was not tight enough. We stopped, asked why they did not have the right tools and got the simple reply that they have to share what they have. I had an old multi tool in my camelbak (one of those cheapo Ryder types that was never used in any event) and gave it to the kid. It looked like he just found gold.

Perhaps the focus should be to encourage these kids to continue riding their bikes. They are not the ones jumping over your back yard wall and taking your bikes.

  • 1 month later...

wow, you're going to get it back!! let's hope it's been inside the pound and not in the rain!

I've had a bike stolen whilst studying there, this was 15 years ago and the perps where normally kids who got off once caught anyway. i used to check the police station once a month anyway, amazing the bike turnover there and the range of stuff that would come in.

the other place that was notorious for reselling bikes was that bike shop with a rhyme in it opposite the republic...at least 4/5 friends recovered their bikes on their shopfloor.

Your bike is at the Cloetesville police station, check page 2 of today's Eikestad news for the article and photo. Contact WO Charlton Pietersen at 021 809 5062 or Serg. G.O. O'Brien at 021 888 5940

Haha, you beat me to it, also saw it in the Eikestad news this morning
