Thanks guys, much appreciated.

My strategy is to bridge the 5 minute J seed gap by attacking the 20 to 23km mark and bridging the I seed gap mark by attacking the 34mark -  39km mark. I choose these in particular because they have the steepest course gradients where drafting counts for nothing and where I wont have to rely as much on bunching. On 40km and onwards the race should be fragmented enough for me to just push and catch each successively faster batch. What I cannot do is rely on catching on faster bunches on the latter half of the race as it is an averaged downhill from there. Check the gradient picture I attached.

Yoh...... :whistling:  ride 5 minutes into the bunches ahead in the first 20-40 km? Don't be silly.

I did a sub 3 last year from the K group, albeit barely. There are enough fast riders in the group. Yes, you won't have the luxury of sitting in a big bunch but if your happy to work in smaller groups you'll be fine.

Advise please all ye experienced people... I'm Seeded in A as i said before but my Index is 29. Realistically if I drop back, which bunch would be "Comfy" to drop to?

I dont mind working but i will Die hanging on to the "PRO's"  :drool:

The obvious answer should be "D". The most of us are there, and since you don't mind working we don't mind wheel sucking you.

BTW- how did you find that stretch of road pass Lion Park from Malibongwe to Cedar. I know its lekker downhill, but its narrow (especially for the later bunches) and the surface looked eina.

You guys are spending too much time analysing this race. Unless you are a member of a pro team, forget about "attack here, rest there" etc strategies.

It's the 94.7, just ride it. Ride as hard as you can where circumstances permit, if the pace is too hot for you, sit up and spin for a minute or two then jump on the next train. With 20000+ riders on the road, it's not difficult to find a group that is going just fast enough for you.

I've followed this plan every year, and done a sub 3 every year. If a 52 year old fattie like myself can do it, then the rest of you scrawny 20-something whippets can do it too.

Ride hard, but within your capabilities. Don't go too hard early in the race. Save something for the last 20k's. It's not rocket science.

D can work for Me , Thanks ....

That stretch is rather narrow and the left edge is rough, dangerous gutter (hands over eyes). Its a quick section . Cruising alone from Lionpark intersection to Steyn city gates took me a relaxed 12 mins

  1. Full road closure, no need to keep left and watch out for cars;
  2. It's almost the same width as the R55 at heartbreak hill, but without the uphill that results in 100's of cyclists grinding to sudden halt to get off and push.
