Think last year's beta was 1.15 - so the debate is settled then, the new route is easier than the old one....

And the harder MTB track went from a Beta of 1.14 (ish) last year to 1.06 this year..... (Cant confirm cos PPA down again)

That's crazy (Beta).. this 94.7 was surely more challenging than previous years.. I also got a fright when I saw it. Think its a 'ppa' thing

The beta is used to describe how much more difficult a race is for the slower riders compared to the winner, not the overall difficultly.

 

Yes, the route is more difficult to last, but that is reflected in a slower winning time, and there were other factors that made things easier for the slower riders, e.g. there was a strong southerly wind in the early morning that died down by mid morning.

 

So if you did the same time as last year, you would still get a better index. e.g. for a time of 3:30: 

Year Winning Time  Beta  Index
2013      2:08:41  1.17  54.01
2014      2:21:53  1.08  44.45

A 3:30:00 in 2013 would give you the same index as a 3:44:39 in 2014.

 

So I think that the beta value is fair.

So that means I achieved a sub 3 for last years route on the new route using a grading system! Winner

 

I know a few folk who improved from last year to this year so considering the time difference in the winning times they did pretty well.

Does anyone have a Garmin route file of the 2014 947 Cycle Challenge (Think its a .gps file).

 

Any assistance would be appreciated.
