I hear you Gerald, I did a recon ride this weekend and did all of the route except the motorways (I chickened out there) and the section inside Steyn City.

AND I'll say this, although I really like the new route, its definitely tougher than the old one with a good bit more climbing... I recon add an extra 15 min to the licences groups times and anything up to an hour for the guy who hasn't trained and rocks up in a cows suit.

Our ride yesterday was a club one, so we had a mix of all capabilities, and relevant feedback according to their experience. Given we had to stop at many intersections the continual stop/start didn't help, but at least they got to ride some of the climbs without momentum from the downhills, making it just that little bit tougher.

One common comment was "that was harder than I thought it would be" and "I'm glad I've seen the route today and not for the first time on race day". Psychological battle won. Parking was also mentioned (or the uncertainty of it) as we cycled on William Nicol towards Mnandi drive.

Obviously there aren't many of us that can comment on the Steyn City bit, but considering all the climbs are rideable in the big blade, I don't think it's going to make much (time) difference to the seasoned riders, as much as it will for the weekend warriors and of course the first timers (the perennial "only do this event are included as first timers).

And then there is the weather... under ideal conditions, I think the Vets racing categories will be just as quick as before, but perhaps more thinned out over the route. The regular top contenders will be there and the guys struggling to hold on over an undulating route will be dropped. Perhaps the same for the early alphabet seeded groups. For the rest, well... must just enjoy the roads closed to traffic once a year.

Weather conditions yesterday were ideal, a bit of a breeze, overcast, low temperatures, etc.

I really wonder how much more difficult it can be.  The windy flat/drag of the N14 replaced by some uphill but also downhills, what looks like 10ks, can it be so much worse?  or am I naïve?

It's called High Hill, as you take a left off Kloof you ascend even higher.

Proper 39 blade stuff, one can still get up Northcliff in the 53 .

Point me in that direction, o' wise one.

What area, how do I get there?

This sounds like a must do....

When you are on Club Road, coming from Gilooly's side, the road gets to a funny little split, it carries on straight to the right and splits to the left, that is Kloof road and as you are about to Summit, this goes off to the left.

This is not directed at Wyatt, but for those who are trying to find where his photo was taken...

Kloof rd = Sylvia Pass.

The road the goes off to the left at the top of Sylvie's is called The Ridge Rd.

The switchbacks that the photo was taken from is on Kallenbach Drive.

Type any of these bold bits into Google Earth to find the location.

One of my favourite areas to ride when I lived in JHB for 10 years.

Eish, sorry to hear.

I've been on my IDT since Amashova a couple of weeks ago due to a small hammie tear and a bit of ITB that I'm trying to recover from (my bike won't see the road until race day). But considering your situation at least I have a chance to ride so I really can't complain.

Heal up soon.

Some of us still need to climb off the bike and push up NorthCliff

With my crappy lack of training, bad weather would be welcome. The pace will be a lot slower and the fairweather woosies will not know how to handle it.

Watch all the regular commuters start smiling if they see rain in the forecast :)

Hey Buddy, Distant weather predictions seem  to be in your favour. Max 25 with early morning showers expected.

But we all know that what they weather gods predict and what actually happen aren't always the same thing ;)
