+1000000...if you have 5 or 6 BIGGER races a year (Like Argus and 94.7) with CLOSED roads, they will ALL become sell-out races with 30,000+ cyclist...

Argus and 94.7 are GROWING in numbers...because it's SAFER!!!

I agree 100% wish there were more races with closed roads but I just don't see it happening. The second largest race here in the cape (die Burger) easily sells out, yet the organisers just cut-off the number of entrants at 5K and it's raced on open roads. Seems to be no desire from them to grow the numbers further which can justify a road closure

And Amashova. I'm all ways surprised Amashova is not bigger given the road closure. I guess the logistics of a different start / finish locations puts people off.

Jip...that's very strange...and I am sure that is one of the "older" races in SA history??

Die Burger is on our "Bucket list" hope to be down there one year...sooner, rather than later.

I must agree Gary...wanting to plan this into our schedule the last 2 or 3 years...but the LOGISTICS does hamper us a bit...but it will still be one of the races we would love to do in the near future...our club members and friends go down every year...so it must have it's positive points!

Toughen up and ride back to the start after the race

Yeah thats the sad truth hey, while the 94.7 is growing, other road event attendances are dwindling....

Then again, when a race like the Dome 2 Dome costs R300 to enter and doesn't even have a goodies bag, can we really be surprised?

Don't forget that the fixed cost to run a race doesn't change if the numbers decline/increase.

Well most of the costs, that is.

D2D, say has 3000 entries @ R300 = R900K

Sounds about right for operating costs.

Gerald: what would it take for more races to get road closures? (I'm guessing, as someone involved in organizing a large race, you have looked in to it.)

Good question, maybe then the race organisers could use it as an incentive, "If we have 3000 entries we can get road closures" surely this would be a great marketing tool to expand "SAFE" cycling.

It's obviously not the Argus, but still a great day out.

I have a Dutch business colleague who is a social cyclist and loves both the Argus and 94.7 so that twice a year for the last 4 or 5 years he and his bike fly to SA to attend :)

Agree with jcza, bugger the goodie bag. Road closure is a big issue and for me and then the number collections is also an issue. Normally when the number collections is not close by then I also give the race a pass especially with e-tolls.

Give me a few days to gather all the info, then I will try reply as objectively as possible. Okay, maybe more than a few days.

As a fellow cyclist, I'd love to race in more full road closure events.

I was driving on the route just the other day when visiting a client in Fourways. The part from Malibongwe (past Lion Park) down to Cedar road is a mess. Narrow and the surface really is shitty. Cedar rd looks a bit better, but I'm going to miss the N14.
