Saw a thread or two here asking for details on doing a DEXA scan.

I looked for a long time to find a DEXA operation in Cape Town that can do a body composition scan and report accurate fat and lean muscle percentage. The DEXA machines at the various hospitals only do bone density.

Eventually found a practice in Durbanville, had it done (13% body fat) and immediately went to Virgin to compare (19%) and then home to check my bioimpedance scale (23%).

You get a pretty cool report with an actual graphic on where on your body the fat sits. As the old saying goes; inside every fat person is a thin one trying to get out. With this scan, you literally see the thin person. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/images/smilies/smile.gif

I heard the most accurate method is to do a postmortem. Put all the fat in one bucket and weigh it. The rest has a large margin of error.

Admittedly not terribly useful but anyway. It is the gold standard.

Old school method: Just keep on losing weight till you have veins on your thighs and stomach, eyes sunken and generally looking terrible. Then you know its low enough.

Got myself a set of callipers at Sportsmans Warehouse.   Around R100-150.

There are a LOT of apps in the appstore that shows you where to measure and then calculates your bodyfat.

There are about 7 methods of skinfold measuring and all of them will give you different measurements.

I also have a Withings Scale that does the measurement and it is consistently 4-5% higher

Ja nee, I only have veins below my calves and on my hands

I follow the very scientific pinch 'n inch method.  If I can pinch n' inch then I'm not there yet.

But seriously for the first time in my life weight loss is not about what I look like.  It is a fitness goal to improve my performance on the bike.  I now see food as fuel and nutrients to help me achieve my goals and not as the enemy I need to fend off with willpower all the time.

Chart for men:

post-4407-0-33180400-1395490233.jpg

Last year I did the Vitality fitness test and if I remember correctly, I was about 19%.

I've lost just over 9Kg since then, and after my Vitality Elite Fitness test last week it shows 17.1% - which was quite disappointing. I thought I was less.

But then looking at this chart, I'm probably closer to 25% than the 15%. My skin colour is probably closer to the 20% bloke too (at least the bit under the tan-line)
