Cape Epic cutoff times

Yip 2006

Jip was a K@K one. we had no brakes for the last 30km or so. Use our shoes on the rear wheel to slow down. and then there were not enough brakepads in town for everyone. Lucky us we had our own.

Still a day and an Epic where every moment is very fresh in my memory.

Every year we hear how it's the hardest, wettest, windiest, most technical ..........Epic yet.

I will have to say that 2006 will probably stand as the most challenging Epic yet.

Eina, couple hrs away and the thread has already turned into a nob measuring contest.

I still believe you can't have everything. We want to race against the pro's,we want to ride in a UCI event. You enter what some might consider to be the toughest stage race in the world but at the end a lot of guys are looking for sympathy.Sorry,I believe if you enter, you get your sh*t together and do what needs to be done.

I still believe it's pointless having cut of times if they don't keep to it.

At Comrades you have to qualify to be on the start line so at least those at the Comrades have a certain level of fitness at the start. If your granny has the 50K and is lucky enough to get a entry she would be at Meerendal.Should I then feel sorry for her because it's her 'dream' or because she is old, unfit, overweight, has a job and children.

NO

Sorry ,you enter Epic of your own free will.I don't give any sympathy to those at the back because they just havn't done what is necessary to do Epic comfortably. If you taking shots every day scraping to make cut off you only got the man in the mirror to blame.

Dear Stringbean, at the risk of BigH appearing and calling me coarse let me say - you are the NOB!

I am a granny, I help my partner run his business, I do part time daycare to my grandkids, getting my son through matric, supporting my daughter and son in law with as much babysitting as possible while they train for ironman. I ended up GC 464 - pretty piss poor in your eyes I am sure but I made cut off with 90 minutes plus to spare most days except for where severe mechanicals and a really bad crash spat me out to the back of the field. So I don't deserve to be there - please climb off the high horse you are attempting to sit on you ignorant, arrogant little person! I trained as hard as I could and to the best of my limited ability clearly but I finished and I have the medal and a whole lot of pride to go along with that.

That's the real world right there.

Nice post.

Not the rarified air of the PRO cyclist who is a unique and special athlete

Or the single guy who's sole hobby it is to ride his bike for 40 hrs a week. And so on.

Congratz, jaxtun.

You've made it

Recover well.

There will always be one day that you fear the cut off - the queen stage of the epic you wake up and your partner has a bad stomach bug. Cannot eat or drink... that my friend is when you start with crisis management you have to get him through 2900m of climbing and 115km!! And he only has enough power to neg his small blade infront. not talking about climbs etc!!

Cycling is about people like Jaxtun. These are the people that make the sacrifices to get things done. The ones that go out early in the morning or late in the evening because they have daytime responsibilities. The ones that leave loved ones behind on the weekend so that they can get in that long ride.

These are the people that make up the majority of cycling community. The pro's, as good as they are, are nothing but marketing tools. The likes of Kevin Vermaak wouldn't be doing what he is doing if he relied solely on the entry fee or the Sausers and the Evans'. People like Jaxtun keep that race going year after year.

So to all the mid to back pack riders that arrived at the start line regardless of whether you finished or not, well done.

To all those of you that think that they shouldn't be there, _______ you (Fill in the appropriate expletive)
