Works a charm for backs/spines, too - I have a spinal fusion and I can halve my physio visits if I use the roller regularly.

Eina, i have used one at the gym. The thought of a foam roller on sore, swollen muscles after a long ride. Eish Eish Eish.

I also struggle to recover so i think i am going to try the roller and the compression socks thing.

Are you recommending full compression socks i.e. full legs.

Compression for the quads is key.

The most hard working muscle group when cycling.

Does compression really help? I know its mandatory for triathletes.

I read somewhere a while ago that there was no definitive proof either way, as you say it is compulsory for triathletes off and on the bike ;)

Definitely

Micro-tears in muscles can heal quicker

Hence, compression helps with injuries as well

RICE method

Recovery improves with fitness. The more you train, especially on consecutive days, the better you will recover. Just make sure to rest enough between intense multi-day sessions to prevent over-training

Yip, recovery training is the only real way to be able to recover between multi-day stage events.

In terms of compression garments my understanding is they promote blood flow to the area and this helps the recovery process. Could be wrong.

This is how it was explained to me after surgery last week.

Foam rolling works wonders to help loosen muscles. Be very careful on your lower back.

Also do as much core strengthening as you can. A weak and fatigued core will cause other muscles to work harder to support you on the bike. You want your legs to power the bike. Not support your lower back.

Would you guys say that compression tights is only beneficial for recovery. Some pro cyclists wears it the night before a race as well.

Maybe I should dig out my compression pants. Actually forgot that I own a pair

Yip, the training is the key!

You have to get your body used to riding long and hard on consecutive days. Make sure your base fitness is very solid and slowly train up until you can do the daily distance, then start bringing the long rides closer together until you can do them back to back. Then start doing 3 in a row and so on. All the time, keep recovery, as advised above, in mind, and don't over-train.

All the other bits will help and might save your bacon, but the training is the foundation of the whole tower!

Did my 1st 2 day event. Did the Cradle trophy and was really finished at the end of yesterday. I also didn't feel fully recovered at the start of day 2.

Now my question is how long should I recover and how?

2nd part of my question, how do you make sure you recover enough after day one for day two and day two for day three in a stage?

What exactly do you mean by "didn't feel fully recovered"? Do you mean nutritional wise, muscles sore and/mentally?

It is normal to be sore the next day and tired. There are a lot of fads and personal choices, but in my mind the best is just to eat right before, during and after and also to rest after the stage.
