If you take on a sport with passion and commitment, most of types of sport will be tough and enjoyable at the same time.

Cycling in all its forms is an awesome sport, so is rugby, tennis, paddling, surfing etc.

If you have ever done a three hour surf session in big swell, cycling won't seem that tough anymore. Same for a tough rugby game, it is high intensity and your body takes knocks all over. But then again an XCO race or Ultra XCM like Attakwas can be just as hard or harder than the above mentioned sports.

It's about how well you are prepared and how far you push yourself.

I really miss the rugby from my university days. The camaraderie and sore post match body cannot be rivalled by other sports.

At school and varsity I played hockey at provincial level. We always joked - "If blood scares you, go play rugby"

Man, those were the days. I was beyond top fit. Played 7 days a week - trained 3 hours per day for 5 days, matches days 6 and 7.

Playing hockey 7 days a week was one of the only reasons why I kept going to school ha ha.

Agree with the OP!

The English Premier League footballers were complaining about 3 games a week at the end of December... Thats 3 games of around 12km covered per day...

Umm, even a basic South African 3 day road tour sounds more strenuous than that, never mind a 3 week grand tour of 3,500km where the riders still ride 100km on their 'rest' days just to keep the legs spinning.

A really hard and tough soccer game leaves me way more exhausted than a 50km bike race.

Averages are normally even higher than 12km. Add to that hits taken in tackles and it gets pretty rough.

I challenge you. Do 12km of stop start sprints and see how hard it really is. Doing that 3 times a week and add to that the training and it becomes too much.

Just because you can cycle 100km+ doesn't mean you will last 90min in a fast paced soccer game.

As cyclists we moan about the way we are treated by non cyclists with regard to it being apparently "easy", but do the same to people playing other sports.
