What do you call that black spray on rubber that you put on your wheels to protect it? the one that you can peel off at a later stage?

Plasti-Dip Liquid Rubber Coating, available at Midas, Autozone etc

so for someone who knows nothing ... what sort of reasonable mileage does one get from a motorbike tyre?

Depends entirely on the rider.

Some tyres also wear differently on different surfaces. Im talking mainly about dual sport rubber.

On a Bridgestone BT56 I got 8000-9000km on a rear, with a Pirelli Supercorsa I got 1000km.

Depends on the tyre, where you riding (trackdays, etc) and your wrist is probably the biggest factor!!!

Just driven past our little dodgy car dealership here in Krugersdorp which also stocks a few bikes and a yellow R1 caught my eye - its a 2006 50th Anniversary R1-SP edition - the one that came out with Ohlins, a slipper clutch and Marchesini wheels.  Price is fair too at R89K - given that the SP's were selling new at R119K when a standard one was around R80k I think.

It's not the bargain of the century, but if you are looking for something a little different, and that will most likely hold it's value better than the run of the mill R1 in years to come I would consider it.

Its the pre big bang model though. They are pretty though, just think a 2009 CBR1000 for the same price is a better buy IMO.

Is there a 0 missing there?

On Bridgestone BT's i get around 8000 km's too. I am relatively gentle on tyres though.

And the last of the 5 valve motors until they released the bigbang. I never understood why they went back to 4 on the 2007/8, it was a completely different ride.
