Ha-Ha - funny you mention that - I went for a whole bunch of blood tests at the beginning of the year, because it's the responsible thing over 45 blah blah blah.....

 

And one of the things they tested was my Testosterone level. Not pretty

You need to ride your bikes more.... PM is probably more suited to a discussion

+1 to that. Even though the channel is funded by a motorcycle accessory store (not dissimilar to Revzilla and Rocky Mountain ATV), they don't hold punches when it comes to pointing out the weak points on products, even the expensive ones.

 

I find that with Revzilla and RMATV they're more salesmen than product reviewers. F9 never says "click in the link below to buy".

I'm slowly falling out of love with the KTM 790 Adventure R.

 

This is mostly due to the fact that KTM has gone El Cheapo on what is a premium priced bike, for its category.

 

They go for $23,800 here in New Zealand (about R234 000, so yes we get ripped), but even the SA price tag of R186 000 is not pocket change.

 

Here are a couple of the things that I think could have been done better...

 

Clutch Lever... cable?! Really KTM?! This must be the about the only off-road aimed KTM using a cable clutch. Heck, even the 65cc kids bike has a hydraulic clutch lever. Where's the Brembo or Margura?!

If this bike had been launched at about 20% cheaper (NZD$19,000 here or R150,000 for an SA bought bike), then those cost cuts could have been overlooked.

 

But the fact that a 1090 Adventure R (with Brembo's, hydraulic clutch, bigger engine etc) is just 7% more (at R199,000 in SA) makes one feel kinda ripped off... doesn't it?!

 

Yes, granted it's a different bike, for different purposes, but surely the fact that it's supposed to me more off-road orientated than its bigger Adventure R brothers means that it shouldn't just be a cheaply made Duke 790 shoved into an off-road frame.

 

Anyway, rant over... I think THIS is where I should direct my attention for a mid-sized off-road capable adventure bike...

 

Behold the Husky 701 with KIT701 setup.

 

The SA made Omega setup is also pretty cool, but I like the KIT701 version because it uses KTM OEM Rally rear and front tanks, plus the upswept exhaust finishes off that rally look.

 

Not a cheap setup, but will have longer range, lighter, and be more off-road capable than the 790 Adventure R. And it's still WAY cheaper than the real real... a Husky/KTM 450 RR

I take your point about the hydraulic clutch but the Brembos - maybe not. Even BMW have their own branded brakes now which are made by Hayes. Users say they are great with some even saying they are an improvement on the Brembos.

 

Could it not be that other manufacturers have caught up? I can't see that KTM or BMW would compromise on safety and put sub-standard brakes on a bike.

Mightily impressed with the lil Versys, goes well , very smooth, big bike for us tall ous and around 70 mpg.

 

The only thing I don't like about that model is the silver rims.  I know it's only cosmetic, but it makes the bike look a bit dated (in my opinion).  Slap on some black Excel's and it'll be a winner. 

Can't wait for the 400 version :clap:

I equate this to Specialized riders thinking that Specialized branded bars, stems, seatposts, and all other manner of OEM components are amazing and they're better than Hope or Renthal or any of those nice premium parts  :ph34r:  :lol:

Yes, I do agree that BMW or KTM would not compromise on safety... BUT they are in the business of making money, and if they can save some pennies by doing it in house (also read as in India/China) then they will try sell the matchy-matchy dream like Specialized and BMW do.

 

In the case of the KTM 790, I'm not buying that "dream" they selling. Their Dakar winning bikes all use Brembos. All their bigger Adventurers use Brembos. Their championship winning MX bikes (Ryan Dungey) use them. And while we're at it let's throw in their top enduro riders like Jonny Walker (not to be mistaken for the alcoholic beverage).

 

Yes the KTM brakes are made by J.Juan (Spanish/Chinese company who have experience on the SBK circuit, although both the SBK and MotoGP champions use Brembo's, haha), but yeah I'm pretty sure the reason we're seeing KTM OEM brakes on the entry level Dukes (made in India) and the 790 adventure, is the same reason that from 2020 the 790 LC8c engines will be made in China... Not because "the users thinks it's an improvement", but because they're cutting costs.

 

Fine for an entry level Duke... not so fine for a "premium" [priced], mid-size adventurer.
