To Camelbak or Not to Camelbak

The banter between cyclists and friends on morning rides is part of the sport. I get teased for my pink Rapha socks, or matching kit, or my lack of MTB skills all the time, but it’s all done with a level of affection.

Never had friends, will not know. But will remember if I maybe one day get my dog to speak.

I've found my dogs make more intelligent conversation than most ;)

Thats because you ride with a Camelbak.

Think you need a couple more chirps to get that one right.

It is an ION Villian 8 with SAS Spine Plate.

Your centre of gravity is also much higher and asymetric making those fast runs in the berms feel more sketchy.

In theory, but in reality I doubt it makes that much difference. If you consider the convenience a camelbak offers when it comes to drinking vs a water bottle then it negates any CoG issues that will be noticed by 99% of riders

I suspect the majority of naysayers have never tried one in practise, and are only against them because they are scared of what the fashion police will say.

The biggest problem with camelbacks is having to suck fluid and keeping the damn things clean and hygienic.

Sucking fluid out of a half empty CB when you are out of breath is not fun, and finding black growth in the tube the night before a ride is also a negative. CB’s are much harder to clean compared to a cheap and disposable water bottle.

Two incorrect assumptions here. I have a Camelbak, two now that I come to think of it, you are forced to use them (edit: by the organisers, not necessity) on the Tour de Tuli as Zim doesn't water points and you need to carry a certain level of spares and medical kit. I also used them when I first started riding MTB until i learnt that bottles are good enough.

The other is that they are "naysayers", you ignore several other posts where the "naysayers" said that people must use what they like and that these posts are in jest. Can call them, joking chops, maybe, but naysayers, thats little persecution complexy.

Your other points make sense and I agree with them.

PS: Everybody stop taking this so damn seriously.

Ride your bike of choice, ride it in your own way, choose the helmet and shoes suits you, kit yourself in what you think is necessary & ignore the riding snobs.

Then what on earth cycling related should we discuss here on the hub? I wouldn't learn anything on here if every question or opinion is silenced with "Do whatever you like"

Nothing wrong with people having a bit of debate on the pros & cons of different cycling equipment

Thread revival number 3...

After running dry on a long ride this weekend I'm thinking of taking the fall and going back to a pack for long rides.

Anybody using one of those USWE packs?
