Do people actually use them?

All I know is, give no one permission to tow my car. If necessary leave car at the scene and organize a tow-in from the garage you will be doing repairs

Let me say upfront that I have no connection with FNB, other than using their Petro Card. Users should note that there are a number of FREE accident/towing/stranded options with this card that ACTUALLY work. Speaking from experience. Edited by Tromp

These days there are a number of ER24-type of accident chasers. Driving equally reckless ( but with blazing red lights ). At least , they could be saving a life - depends which of the three gets to the scene first.

If I have a choice between facing my mortality and getting mouth to mouth from a tow truck driver with leftover cabbage impaled on his five days of crusty stubble and breath that you can measure in octane levels I'll take my chances with the afterlife.

Okay. I will make that four in stead of three. The fourth being the Grim Reaper. Still , no charge. Edited by Tromp

Does generally motor vehicle accident insurance not cover towing? If it does, there must be a lot of uninsured drivers  Or do the insurers pay out the tow truck drivers?

My insurance ( Santam ) does cover the towing . However , make sure that YOU phone the insurance company to get approval. It is known that the truck driver dials his " office " to get the go ahead i s o. the insurance company. Further , there are times that your car needs towing without being involved in an accident. In that case, you can also use the free service provided through the ( FNB? ) Petro card.

Saw two more TT racers this morning along the M7. Mounting islands, weaving between robots and cutting people off. Scary stuff."

I agree, these triathlon guys on those TT bikes are a menace!

Yes most of them do.

Friend had a small incident a couple of weeks back.

Tow Truck arrived, got the car back on its wheels and towed it to their depot.

He is insured and didnt have to pay a cent

There are a lot of unlicensed cars and drivers out there, all of whom are uninsured. Add to that the number of drivers who just couldn't be arsed - that's a lot of uninsured metal being piloted by incapable pilots.

I'm guessing that at least part of the reason that these tow truck drivers have suck quick response times is to keep their clients out of trouble.

They definitely have a premium service for drunk drivers who'd rather the cops didn't get involved...

I gather there is a minimum weight you have to be before you can be a tow-truck driver - and its quite a high number . . . . ;-)

People always joke about tow truck drivers rocking up before the police or the paramedics.....That is not true!! This is SA, the looters arrive first! Took this pic a few months ago .......it had not even been ten minutes after the prang occured.
