Pedestrians are supposed to walk (run) facing traffic. It's in the highway code and road traffic act, among others. It makes sense, since pedestrians are slow moving, generally more agile than other traffic and don't have rearview mirrors.

I did not know this.

My bell:

Also makes other bikers feel inferior, due to the fact that they cant greet me back when I greet them with a smile and a ring-ring.

have to admit, ringing it more than I should... maybe also because I don't have shifters to entertain my thumbs

I have two bells on mine. One for each thumb

As a multi-sport enthusiast here is my take :

As far as road running and cycling goes cyclists should be moving on the same side of the road and in the same direction as the cars and runners should be going in the opposite direction so everyone SHOULD see each other. If this is not the case you are on the wrong side of the road !!!!

All MTB's should have a bell this is just common sense. Any runner with STUFF in their ears is just looking to get it sooner or later.

I've noticed that a lot of road runners seem to think its fine running in the road into oncoming traffic. What's with that?

This is so you the runner can see the cars coming toward him/her and the cars can see you. Everyone sees each other. This is the defacto way it should be done. If you are not running like this then you MAY be a novice or have a death wish.

Thanks for that but I still prefer to ride my MTB on the pavemunt on the wrong side of the road . Been doing it for 15 years and have not yet taken a pedestrian or a car out . I like to see what is coming for me when on the bicycle and will continue to do so .
