Thanks for taking the time to reply... very useful.

I am not having any technical issues I am just asking a simple question as to which one is best. When I create routes using Strava for my edge 510 it recommends TCX. I saw one or two people saying Fit. and also on the website. (That is what I am going to use) Thanks

Both will work - although some tcx files needs to be converted for the Edge 500 (not sure about the 510). From what I gather the fit file is smaller and I read on some Garmin forum that the unit actually converts the tcx to fit in order to use it - cannot vouch for it though. If you zoom in on something like GPSviewer both types of files seems to have the same number of way points. I loaded the fit file because it's smaller. The tcx one will work as well...

Used Fit on my Edge 800 and it not only works but gives the route profile and time / distance to the finish ( obviously the time is based on the time of the person that rode the course that was downloaded). My guess is that the fit file should also be the best for the 500.

Regarding GPS riding.

I can assure you all you will not get lost. Following the GPS maps are very easy, and will warn you if you have taken a wrong turn. The first two days will probably not be used as there are always other riders to follow. The last day in the sugar cane fields there could be a ops ability, especially if there are a three way split road and tyre marks on all three. But as soon you get +/- 30 meters of course your GPS will tell you. Did this in J2C and lost only about 40 seconds.

Now some other reminders regarding your Gps. When choosing the day to ride under courses, you will then select Ride. It will then ask you "Navigate to the start of the course?" to which you will say NO (or press "X") Remember to press the stop watch start button when the race start. On the Garmin 810 as you start the screen automatically change to the timer screen. From there as you ride you can chose the page you prefer, eg riding time details, map, assent or descent screen, or any other screen you prefer. My preference for map is to have it set to 200 meters.

So don't let this GPS navigation play on your mind before the race. After about 10 km on day one it will be as if you have always used it. Enjoy your races which ever you are doing.

At the risk of sounding like a completely different thread:

A bit of a moral dilemma- I had a proper lie down last week and stuffed my back. I have done a few 1 hour LOW intensity rides since but my back is really getting no better. My partner takes the S2C very seriously (his major event each year). I have doubts about being able to do a reasonable ride.

Do I pull out knowing that he will have to ride on his own (too late for a substitute) or do I give it a go and hope for the best (possibly making his ride crap)?

Normally I am quite a bit stronger than him so a have a little bit of leeway.

What would you do?

Don't take chances with your back I would say...

Open chat with him and let him decide

Agreed. My take on this is that you have very little chance of making a last minute substitution that would put your partner in a position to achieve his race goals. So either compromise or don't do the race at all. The latter seems quite drastic so I would say that you have to reset your objectives for the race and by the sounds of it your partner has a chance to look after you as opposed to the other way round. Afterall that's what partnerships are about, looking after each other.

Talus - you're a machine. As long as the back holds out you'll be cool. And if not you're a doctor - prescribe yourself something for the pain :-)

Plus I owe you about 50 beers so best you be there!
