Hi

 

I bought myself new set of ZTR ARCH EX rims with Hope Pro 2 hubs and need to get Disc brake rotors. LBS suggested that I go from std 160 rotors to the bigger 180 rotors. I am 6.6 and weigh in at 113kg.

 

I have my old set of wheels with std shimano 160 rotors which I am going to use as a road set with slicks.

Going the 180 route I would have to space the brake set to accommodate the bigger rotors. Which in turn would null and void my road wheel set rotors.

 

My question is is there really a big difference in breaking power between 160 and 180 rotors?

 

And looking at the Hope Saw Floating Disc (http://www.hopetech.com/product/disc-rotors/) is there a BIG benefit above the normal std shimano single metal rotors?

Physics wise it does make a difference - go read up on Centripetal forces - bigger is better (you increase stopping forces at the centre of the circle/rotor). In practice you'd think 20mm is not going to make THAT big a difference, but to be honest; I think I felt it when going to 180mm from 160mm... or it could be that Shimano SLX is just that good! :thumbup:

I am 95kg and went from 160/160 to a 180/160 and it made a huge difference. I have the Magura Storm SL rotors on all my bikes and a pair of cheapie Alligators on my spare set of wheels. I can now actually bomb down the hill and know I will stop, instead of hoping I will stop. On the plus side the front brake has not faded completely as happened before. Maybe the caliper does not work as hard with the bigger rotor and it could also be that the heat dissipation off the bigger rotor is a bit better. BTW I have the same wheel and hub combo.

Ok great so going to the 180 size is actually a good thing.

What makes me worry is the fact that my SLX brakes now need to be spaced to accommodate the 180 size.

Would the adding of spacers have a negative affect on the quality, stability of the brake system?

 

If you had to take a rotor from the LBS (http://www.cwcycles.co.za/catalog/parts/disc-rotors) which would it be?

right price, quality, size etc for my size.

 

Maybe something like this for the spare road wheel set

You have it spot on. Don't want to ruin that nice MTB wheelset with two cheap rotors. Just remember the little spacer that needs to go between the caliper and the fork. 160 to 180mm adapter. Something like this:

6''6'and 115kgs. I started on 180mm X 2 and subsequently put a 203 on the front. It was the difference between stopping and not. Have the alligators from CWC on now and they work as good as the two piece and slx rotors I had previously although I will be shortly fitting my two piece formula rotors so should have a good comparison point then. Two piece rotors do however look great!

I had over heating issues last year on the K2C.

 

Im 120kg (give or take a few, depending on what day of the week it is) and went from 160mm to 180mm when i upgraded my brakes from Avids to Shimano SLX, Also went from avid rotors to XT ice tech rotors.

 

it made a HUGE difference. But it could be the brake change/rotor change or rotor size change.

 

But my bike stops without issue now!

YOu get proper spacers for all the different size rotors , A hand full of washers are not good spacers !

I went from 203 on Avid CR to 160 on Shimano SLX up front. The 160 setup works and feels better, make your own conclusions (I don't think the rotor size change made the difference ;)). I do plan to go up to 180 once I get the correct adaptor (hopefully this will make it even better).
