For my training bikes I go to the UBS/LBS ;) and just ask for the cheapest 10sp chain at that moment in time and take whatever they give ......

In my case that invariably also means cheapest cassette at the same time

Perfect thank you, now i am wiser. Where is the idiot from yesterday that accused the Hub of crucifying him for asking questions? I'm living proof that the hub helps educate fellow cyclists.

You and me both. Learnt a lot in this thread. Funny how sometimes the cheaper things work just as well. I have a Deore 9sp RD on my one bike mated to XT shifters, the shifts on that bike are like gunshots, instant and smooth.

Shifting smoothness comes mostly from the shifters...that is why you would always run better shifters(XTR in my case) vs RD(XT in my case) and not the other way around

For me KMC SL Gold are great but expensive so that's kept for the road bike.

I have recently given a TAYA chain a try and the cheapest one at that R210.00 and it's only 14g heavier but even being a race snake I will take that at 1/3 of he price.

So far I have 1000km on it and it's still like new.

I have broken 2 chains - both shimano.

Have heard that Wipperman chains are very strong. Are they available in SA?

Wipperman are supposed to be the best quality chains, pricey though , CWC used to stock a few.

Who sells Taya chains?

Couple of years ago many many 'cheaper bikes' were specced with lower spec shifters but with an XT for example RD ... but maybe that's just cause that was what you would notice?

can you reuse a KMC quick link on a new chain?

Yebo yes. I tend to replace quick links at the same time as the chain though, but I use KMC chains and they come with a quick link in the box. The old one gets added to the collection in the pack or returned to the customer, depending on whether it's mine or not.

I wouldn't use an old link on a new chain, new chain new link. Old link will have wear on the pins, have seen some really toasted master links from worn out chains not a chance I'm using that with a new chain but you could though if you really wanted to.

snip snip ..

My advice that has given me the most life out of my chains and drivetrain are to rotate two or if you can three chains from new. Have one on the bike and the other in different stages of cleaning(butro tub filled with clean green...dont leave for more than two days in this, rinse under warm water once clean and then store) or storage(sandwich bags with a little added synth oil).

If you can don't use turpentine or paraffin for cleaning....it doesnt take much to contaminate waterways if you dont dispose properly.

I bought a SLX 10sp chain to replace my KMC MTB chain on my HT and a 105 10sp chain to alternate with my KMC chain on my road bike. But stupid me didn’t know that shimano chains work with the pin and not the master link. If I remove one of the links to expose the inner link on both sides of the shimano chain would I them be able to use a master link, and will this weaken the chain in any way?

I have sram master links in all my 10spd chains...works perfectly. Just insert the masters on two inners, you are sorted

Seems everyone is on Shimano and SRAM only. From my dirt jumping/street riding days I found that KMC chains (8 speed)  were the only ones that survived. But running both SRAM and Shimano ( 9 and 10 speed respectively) chains on my two MTB's and for normal riding they both seem to perform the same?
