How much uncomfortable fit(in my case width) is acceptable in a new shoe that you can trust will subside/wear in with use?

I definitely have found shoes and clothes in general loosen up (some more than others) after a week or 2 of wear. Actually its something I take very seriously if an item is a little on the big side, if its big now it will be huge in a month of 2.

If the shoe is a bit too tight, don't buy it. I wouldn't rely on stretch to make a narrow shoe fit a broad foot. Remember, your feet also swell when you run. Also, if the shoe does happen to stretch, you can always tighten the laces...Rather buy a wide, D or E fit. Don't buy a shoe or brand because it gets rave reviews or because it is popular. Focus on fit, and find a model or brand that fits you properly. New Balance usually bring in 'E' fits that are better for broader feet. I have very broad feet and have been through three pairs of the New Balance Leadville. Great shoes, but make sure your get the E fit. The only fault I've found in them is on really rough and steep trails where you could do with a little more lateral support. Which is why I've changed to the 980s.

New Balance appear to be the only brand offering 2E and 4E wider width fittings in SA. I have battled for years to find wide shoes for my slabs of meat.

New Balance are the only ones that fit in this case.

In the US I did manage to find Nike in 4E fittings.

I'm lucky that I'm D/E wide. With racing / narrower shoes I usually have to go half to full size up. But I like my shoes snug (I DON'T tolerate ANY form of internal slippage - especially on the trail).

The problem with stretching your shoes is that it may compromise the durability of your shoes, eg. toes breaking out of the toebox.

Apparently water in plastic bags in the toebox, Chuck it in the freezer works if you do it carefully.

The shoes fit perfect length ways, just one foot that's a bit wider(broken big toe in misspent youth) than the other that's the issue.

Hey guys went for a trail run yesterday at Wolwespruit and my shoes definitely need an upgrade. Any recommendations or food deals currently available?

I went on the hunt for some cheap shoes last week...best option I could find were the Asics Gel 7 (I had the Gel 4's and these have lasted for 4 years including now just being worn as normal takkies..)

I couldn't really find anything under R1k. Not a bad basic shoe if you are just doing short runs 2 or 3 times a week....

The Mr Price shoes are actually a good stfting point.

Their race shoes have also won multiple comrades and Two Oceans and LOTS of other local races before everyone poo poos me.

I did an experiment with both the trail and road options.

Trail were not as good as the road, but were very capable for shorter distances, but on the whole the shoes actually last well and tick all the boxes at a fraction of the cost.

Bear in mind I have an incredibly neutral strike and run only in zero drop shoes, so don't need 'support' from shoes. I would buy again if I had to buy running shoes

Salomon is having a decent sale at the moment . Granted I don't hear much good about their shoes but you never know.. they are a very personal thing in the end.

A friend of mine is a surveyor and he swears by Salomons and has done so for many years....

However he does come from a gumboot mining background so ja....
