Where the hell did you do st 6 at R44k a year 15 years ago? And where is your daughter going? Mmm...

I don't have any kids so I don't really know the costs. I can ask me ma how much my HS cost.

I read the other day that the most expensive MBA is in the range of $180-200k! Yes, that is in $.

My matric fees were R150. Guess I'm showing my age :D

Back to the bum cream, try Fit Chamois Cream. Has ingredients similar to many expensive international creams, including Assos, and around R50 a tub.

On the expensive topic, I used to travel to UK a lot. Could buy cycling kit in cycling shops at half price of SA cycling shops. Only difference would probably be shipping costs for local suppliers.

Always amazes me how when the exchange rate drops, the distributors have a warehouse full of stock at the old exchange rate, but when it goes up their warehouse was empty !! Serious bad planning on all their parts.

Baby number 2 on the way and I've suddenly realized how expensive these things are. Looks like I'm going to have to get rid of a few of the bikes, these things are too costly to maintain.

Invest in a new bike before you blow it all on school fees.......

If the retailer or importer has stock they bought at the old exchange rate, if the rate has gone up, they now need to replace it at the new price, so makes sense to bring pricing in line otherwise they effectively aren't making a margin. Doesn't always work like that, but in a country with a declining currency, it does.

I can't afford anything in the shops, it's really hard to get into this sport and get yourself a decent setup, speaking in terms of bike and gear, everything as a whole. I just always keep an eye out for sales on sportsworlds.co.za and hope I can buy it. And I mostly just buy everything secondhand, almost all of my stuff is secondhand, only things that I have have bought myself is shorts (bib) for R350 (sale), shoes and a cycle computer for nice and cheap cheap. I buy shirts at Mrprice sport the ones used for running and so on and so on.

The other day me and dad went to the LBS and he was looking at the tools and just starting laughing at the insane prices they ask for simple tools. He is a mechanical engineer and does tons of private work our garage is like a workshop loaded with tools and machines, and he said the prices they are asking for some of the tools, you can buy your self some of the entry level top brands in tool making which will be of much higher quality.

I find it very lame and dumb because I am a poor student haha, and I just want to have a decent kit you know? But not possible.

Many of the ladies I ride with are fairly well off, so its new 29'er this, carbon that, sani2c entry....

I've had to just accept, and be happy with what I have. It really helps that hubby does all the bike maintenance, parts are expensive enough, so we at least save on labour. I justify the costs, by us not smoking or drinking, and we also don't do movies etc. Cycling is our entertainment. Racing regularly is also expensive, seeing it is the both of us, so we slum it peasant style on the local trails!

many of us have been in your scenario, It's pretty common to be a student and not have the latest bling whatever. If daddy gets whatever you want, then you're just a spoilt kid. If you really really need some carbon magafta, go wait tables or pull pints.

Yes, but they raise the prices of the stock bought at yen old exchange rate, but prices never drop when exchange rate improves. Even when new stock comes in.

I'm confused, I'm not sure if you are referring to it as a way to make money to fund my cycling or as a cheap method of entertainment. To both I say I'm too old!! No thank you!! Now we must say sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread.....

I went down to Cyclelab today and wanted some chamois cream. So i decided to treat myself to Assos. However when i looked at the price I was needless to say a bit shocked. R 249-00 for a tub.

Now i know that this stuff is great but i also know that the average price was R 110-00 to R 130-00 when i last bought.

So what has changed to get from R 130-00 to R 249?

Then I went looking around there and I think that I was clearly bemused.

Shoes for R 4999.

Pearl Izumi jerseys R 1900-00.

Garmin Edge 500 R 3750-00

And lots of other examples.

Now unless i am living in an alternate reality, those prices are high and the margins are stupendous to say the least.

And they have gone up appreciably since i last looked.

So it seems like the concept of a large volume retailer also lead to a much higher cost base and appreciably plump margins.

Or am i missing something vital here.

Prices from overseas shops don't look anything close.

Get yourself some Madaji Milking Cream from Dischem or Pace and Power. Huge Tub for R55.00 - best value for money chamois cream around.

ok some shops are ripping the ass, but i dont know if you MEN have walked around checkers/pick and pay/woolies and noticed the prices of everything???? i know your wives spend the money but go price ANY PRODUCTS in general ALL LINES/PRODUCTS ,,,,this is only the start of pricing to come,

and for this we can thank a few thinGs, our very STRONG rand, the recent strikes will only make itself seen on the shelves in a few months, HOLD ON TIGHT THINGS ARE GOING TO GET HAIRY,

SOON WE WILL BE REFFERING BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS WHEN WE COULD STILL AFFORD CREAM
