Lol. You may want to check your hearing - constantly tripping on things!

Ja. Tell me about it. I also tripped and bought a TLD kit.

Helmet and brain.

Sometimes by brain runs out of oxygen and I make stupid mistakes.

I would suggest, for a beginner to get some of the G-form products, great for cycling.

and gloves - gravel rash on the hands aint nice at all.

The last time my brain switched off, I fell into a thorn bush while riding a race.

O Man, what were teh TLD prices like there? I want some Moto shorts - anyone remember teh name of that SA online place that sells them here?

Um. Depending on shop, year and model 80-130 Euro.

There was a Kenny Enduro lid for 39 Euro. The TLD A1 could be bought for 140. Even the blingy gold version. The one shop in Les Gets had short sleeve TLD shirts for 30 Euro. The older model 5.10 Impacts were 85 euro in some shops so there are bargains to be had. You could also get TLD shop branded riding tops for 30 Euro.

Oh. That reminds me. I kept on tripping and buying new stuff. So much so that I tripped and bought some Kali kneepads.

Oooooo, which ones? Knee Shins or just knees? They have a hard shell right?

Really keen on the AAZIS Plus 180 Knee/Shin Guards... Not that I need anymore padding but I think I have a fetish for cool looking body armour and can't help my self if something different comes out. From what I've read, the Kali's are a great blend of style and protection. I like that they look like comfy soft shell pads but have the hard shell so you know you're well protected as most pads of that style nowadays are going with the 3DF or D30 foam.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the Kali's set you back?

EDIT: Instead of spending all my money on more stuff I don't need, I should actually be saving for an Alpine trip with you guys!!!

I had a little off last night at Tokai on the Dh line - actually it was a save but in preserving my bike I klapped a pine tree with my right knee. It hurt like hell and is bruised and a bit swollen today with a red mark on the knee cap from the impact. That was with the 661 Kyle Strait knee pads on. I would imagine that without them I would not be walking today...

Typically (trail & dirt jumps that I know well):

  • open face helmet (was MET Terra, now TLD A1)
  • full finger gloves (whatever is cheapest. currently Dakine)

AM/Enduro events:

  • open face helmet
  • full finger gloves
  • knee guards (G-Form)

Dirt Jumps that scare me:

  • dirt jump lid/full face (Bluegrass Super Bold / TLD D3)
  • full finger gloves
  • jeans and knee guards (G-Forms)
  • or shorts and knee guards (TLD KG5450)

Downhill:

  • full face lid (same as above)
  • full finger gloves
  • knee guards (TLD KG5450)

and depending on how I feel I may add on or all of the following....

  • elbow guards (G-Form)
  • neck brace (Leatt DBX) - VERY SELDOM. It bugs the heck outta me.
  • upper body armour (Leatt Adventure vest)
  • goggles (EKS. Yes, I know these are strange as "optional", but I prefer riding without goggles).

All that being said, on a day trip to Chatel, I relized while on the Zore lift that I forgot to put me knee guards on that morning. Not wanting to delay the others much I raced back to the chalet. So just helmet and gloves. I set my best time down there that day

Having all the gear is fine and well, but there is something to be said for being able to move freely on the bike and thus prevent a crash in the first place.

g-form is expensive as f.

At it's cheapest, its R600 for elbows, R600 for knees, R1500 pants/thighs, R1500 chest.

I would suggest instead that beginner's put that R4200 towards a better bike or helmet

I really think people have a misconception about protection, thinking that it is bulky and restrictive. A well made pair of knee and elbow guards are light as a feather and comfortable enough to ride with for hours. I do 90% of my riding at Giba Gorge, so generally ride out of the car park with my knee pads in place, and when I get to the top of the inevitable climb, I grab my elbow guards out of my backpack and ride like that for the rest of the session.

Had a big crash riding on my own yesterday afternoon, and apart from a bit of ankle damage (mainly cause i had forgotten to thrown long socks in the car that a.m), i'm largely unscathed. Looking at my knee and elbow guards, they took a lot of impact without me even feeling it.

Cost wise, i recently bought the 2014 model Nukeproof knee and elbow guards through CRC. With their never ending sales, i got them for less 40%, imported them via DHL, took 2 days, and all in all, came in around R1,500. Thats not much money if i compare it to a tumble i took a few months back (where id forgotten my protection at home), simple front wheel wash out on the marbles, gash on the forearm, knee, ended up costing over 5g's after a trip to hospital.

I see CRC still have the nuke proof on "sale" could you ride wine2wales with these on ?

Im sure you could, but you would be the only one. Not too sure if you need protection for a XC style ride, but up to you.

Right now I only use a pair of Knee guards for descending. Sometimes more often in winter I will wear my elbow guards. Oh and a bell super.

Been wanting to get a roost vest, but just havent gotten or rather found one that I like
