I am not sure the safety of cyclists is being highlighted here. Here is a cycling forum (the affected) and we are not even agreeable on the msg. A better less controversial picture would have done the job. Here the msg is lost in controversy and racial innuendos. To make it worse 94.7 station doesn't have the guts to stand by something that is supposed to promote their new image branding.

On the other hand perhaps the hub community can put up something that will counter this picture and put the situation in proper perspective.

That is what an uneducated person like myself refers to as patronising.

If you read my posts very carefully you will see that nowhere did I express anger towards the person who created this image, but my disgust (not anger) is towards the image itself.

So you would suggest that 94.7 removed it to "take the heat off" themselves ?

I think in a round about way we are saying the same thing :) just with different viewpoints, I can assure you my comment isn't patronizing in the least and if you found it that way, I apologise! I was suggesting other people not necessarily yourself were getting angry at the person who created the image... And yes I think 94.7 did exactly that, which for me shows a lack of balls and conviction and honestly think they have shot themselves in the foot with this image. For me a cowards way out...

Let me ask all of you who are saying we should see the satire in this...

Imagine you are the CEO of 94.5

Is this image how you would choose to have public participation in getting your brand represented and award it with a prize??

It's weird that some find this disgusting, but then laugh about blackface.

I can understand both sides/feelings to this satirical "cartoon", although I was not offended. And yes, I have been taken out on my bike by a car head on.

It goes back to something is funny if it doesn't affect you directly, but the tables are turned when it becomes more personal.

I don't think there was any malicious intent, but I guess only the artist can clear that up.

Clearly not, anyone stupid enough to think that it represents the heartbeat of Jozi wouldn't even have enough brains to execute malice.

That's the risk of crowd sourcing a competition. Isn't Men's Health experiencing something similar with Paul Snodgrass getting all the votes for their cover issue? Remember when GreenPeace crowdsourced the name for their gps tagged whale and they suggested a whole bunch of pretty hippy names until the internet got hold of it and voted Mr Splashypants to the top? In both cases they ended up with a lot more publicity than they originally anticipated. I guess the same thing happened here. They certainly got even more public participation after the competition.

I voted for Snoddy. I think it's awesome. An actual, regular Joe being on the front cover.

Plus - you can see they've made a PROPER go at it

Exactly my thoughts on this AndyDude.

I have been hit by a car, only damage was scrapes and bruises.

One of my closest friends was killed by a car, she was 26 years old. She went under an 18 wheel truck. Her husband of 1 year arrived when she still had a pulse but she died on the scene, in his arms. She was buried on Valentines day 2007 and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of her.

So yes, I know the impact of cars hitting cyclists, but I was not offended by this image. Maybe because I don't want to beleive that there was any malice intended by either the artist or the people who voted for it.

Does that make a despicable person, to some hubbers, yes.  I think my trying to see the good in people is the only way I can get through each day without wanting to scream.

@WhackheadS: @bicyclesafetysa I can't disagree with anything that you have said. This was an oversight that has left many people very embarrassed.

Maybe for those that want, they can make a donation to BicycleSafety since they seem to be doing good work. Will find out the details. I'm going to donate something. And don't worry, I'm not going to start an ice bucket challenge for this!

The incident with your friend is incredibly touching and sad, can just imagine how many people have been through similar.

Hopefully this whole 94.7 issue will despite the negative publicity achieve some good in that more people will become aware of the unneccessry carnage that happens on the roads in SA.
