Cyclists Attitude towards motorists CPT

Hi Guys

On a regular basis we read/hear about cyclists being knocked down by motorist. I can only imagine things will get a lot more dangerous for us cyclists heading into the silly season.  My mates and I live in Kuils River and cycle Bottelary and Stellenbosch Arterial roads into Stellenbosch every week. Personally I think those 2 routes are much safer (if safe route exists at all) compared those

used by cyclists out in the southern suburbs.

Yesterday afternoon around 13:30pm I am driving with my family on our way to a kiddies party and I see a team of about 10 guys going along at a Steady pace on Stellenbosch Arterial towards Belhar. On this road the shoulder is very wide, can easily ride 4/5 riders abreast. But not these Okes. The majority of them are cycling outside the yellow line with motorist having to give way to them! I thought I’ll give them a ‘hoot’ just to let them know that they are cycling abreast into the lanes where they might just  get knocked down. You should have seen the arms waving and gestures :cursing:  !!!

I don’t know about other parts of the country but here on the cape flats Sundays are national drinking days!!! And heading past areas like Delft/Belhar/WesBank cycling in traffic lanes where a lot of drivers are under the influence -  it’s a recipe for disaster  .

I don’t think these guys actions/behaviour is going to win us cyclists any favours with motorists out there. Neither is arragonce as I witnessed yesterday. They were wearing blackand orange shorts, matching white and orage shirts. Pity I didn’t think of taking some pic’s to illustrate the lack cycling safety/knowledge from their part.

Keep it safe out htere guys.

Is cyclist only entitled to cycle left of the yellow lane and every one else is entitled to drive between the yellow lines?

Indien dit 'n klomp motorfietse was wat teen 35km/h in die pad tussen die gee lyne gery het sou jy ook vir hulle getoet het dat hulle padgee? Hoe sou hulle daarop reageer?

I also had a run in with cyclist rage after this well kitted guy overtook me on the inside while I was tuning across a busy lane of oncoming traffic.

I had to slam on brakes half-way across the road after he announced his presence by shouting into the window "don't turn, wait for me". He was rude, aggressive and totally in the wrong as I was already driving when he suddenly appeared in my path. I had no idea he was there or ever expected to be passed illegally like that.

I narrowly avoided a head on collision with my wife and daughter in the car.

Not all. But there is a shoulder wide enough why unnecessarily put yourself at risk and cheese motorist off? There's enough bad vibes on our roads as it is don't you think?

Imagine if all of us road users had the same piss poor attitudes of these cyclist?

The motorist contradictions!

1. When cyclist take the law into their own hands and go through red robot (never injuring somebody)/ riding abreast - it's the end of the world!

2. When cyclist take the law into their own hands and ride inside a yellow line - its the end of the world if they ride legally, by riding on the road when their a yellow line to ride inside! But its been considerate so a lot of cyclist do it (including myself), but illegal! Yes it is illegal to ride inside a yellow line!

Motorist will never understand all the dynamic of riding a bicycle. Cyclist who are behind the wheel of a car seem never to set the example of over taking cyclist correctly and that is not at 1.5m but:

a. Indicate that you need to overtake - right indicator well before arrive at the back wheel of the cyclist.

b. Do so when safe and in a separate lane (that would be where their is a dotted line) without breaking the speed limit.

c. Indicate to return to the left lane.

The above practice should not change whether it is just 1 solo ride or group of riders riding single file or even taking up the whole lane i.e. 4 or 5 abreast. The only different if riding 5 abreast it means the motorist should spend less time in the separate lane which maybe the lane with traffic coming towards you. So their is an argument that cyclist riding abreast are also been considerate for riding abreast but also taking the law into their own hands! A line of 5 riders 1 behind each other would be about 10 m long a lot more time needed in a separate lane!

For every idiot cyclist on the road, you get 10 idiot drivers. Only one can kill the other, not visa versa.

Cars/Drivers need to relax more. Having 2 minutes extended to your trip is not the end of the world. Give them space, and overtake when you have a chance.

Cape Townian drivers are impatient, selfish and oblivious and ignorant most of the time. Keep this in mind when cycling and you should generally stay clear of any trouble.

Unfortunately common sense can't be taught...

yesterday we were also out in the same area, but not related to this story, and the motorist decided to jump of her car and smack one of our guys in the group.

she was totally wrong to do that regardless of who was right or wrong. My friend being a gentlemen didn't raise is hand on a women and let it go , other motorists didn't feel the same way though and decided to swear at the motorist for her actions. Other members of our group had to calm down the motorists and just let her be on her way.

with all this crap about cyclists versus motorists we decided to just report the incident to the PPA and if they can follow it up so be it.

I think you are missing the point the OP is trying to make. It's not a case of whether you are within the law as a cyclist. Your first priority when cycling on the road should be self-preservation. The law isn't going to do much when your brains are oozing all over the road after being knock over by some 4-wheeled idiot coming home at 6 a.m. after a night of boozing.

It's getting crazy out there. I am still trying to find out who the guys were or if at all they members of a club. As mentioned shirts were orange and white with black and orange shorts?

Do you as a cyclist pay a yearly vehicle licence fee to ride your bicycle on the road? No you don't. You use the road for free. Motorcycles are allowed to lane split....however they do so at their own risk.

Forgive my tone...not trying to fight with anyone. I'm always suprised when cyclists have that attitude of entitlement on the road. In a time where too many cyclist are being knocked, this is last thing we should be doing. Share the road, respect your fellow road user, irrespective what he is riding\driving.

What is the Traffic Law when it comes to riding abreast ?

No riding abreast unless overtaking another cyclist as far as I can remember.

Also I think the law says cyclists should ride inside the yellow shoulder where there is sufficient space and it is safe to do so... anybody can confirm this?
